Climate Change Helps Polar Invasives Establish and Flourish: Evidence from Long-Term Monitoring of the Blowfly Calliphora vicina [PDF]

open access: yesBiology, 2023
The isolated sub-Antarctic islands are of major ecological interest because of their unique species diversity and long history of limited human disturbance. However, since the presence of Europeans, these islands and their sensitive biota have been under

Dodecanol, metabolite of entomopathogenic fungus Conidiobolus coronatus, affects fatty acid composition and cellular immunity of Galleria mellonella and Calliphora vicina [PDF]

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2021
One group of promising pest control agents are the entomopathogenic fungi; one such example is Conidiobolus coronatus, which produces a range of metabolites. Our present findings reveal for the first time that C.

Effects of clonazepam and flunitrazepam on the development cycle of Calliphora vicina Robineau-Desvoidy 1830 and their forensic implications [PDF]

open access: yesScientific Reports
Benzodiazepines are commonly identified in drug overdose deaths worldwide. However, research on their effects on the most common necrophagous insect species is limited.

First case of traumatic myiasis caused by Calliphora vicina in a crested porcupine Hystrix cristata L. in Italy

open access: yesJournal of Entomological and Acarological Research, 2017
Calliphora vicina (Diptera: Calliphoridae) it is a facultative ectoparasite responsible for traumatic myiasis in humans and warmblooded vertebrates in the world. In this work one case of traumatic myasis caused by C.

Pollination of Enclosed Avocado Trees by Blow Flies (Diptera: Calliphoridae) and a Hover Fly (Diptera: Syrphidae) [PDF]

open access: yesInsects
Despite flies regularly visiting flowers, limited research has gone into their pollination ability on commercial crops. A national project in Australia aimed to identify fly species as potential managed pollinators for the horticultural industry and, in ...

Survival of Calliphora vicina (Diptera: Calliphoridae) embryos under cold temperature conditions: forensic implications [PDF]

open access: yesMedical and Veterinary Entomology, Volume 39, Issue 1, Page 33-40, March 2025.
Cold temperatures significantly reduce survival in early‐stage Calliphora vicina embryos (0%–20% development). Calliphora vicina embryos of later developmental stages (40%–80% development), however, have shown high tolerance to cold temperatures, with very high survival rates.

A methodological approach to age estimation of the intra‐puparial period of the forensically relevant blow fly Calliphora vicina via Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy [PDF]

open access: yesMedical and Veterinary Entomology, Volume 39, Issue 1, Page 22-32, March 2025.
Prediction of the intra‐puparial age of C. vicina was possible based on ATR‐FTIR‐absorption spectra. For age estimation, the full spectral range from 3700 to 600 cm−1 and the use of support vector machines resulted in the most accurate predictions.
