Survival of Calliphora vicina (Diptera: Calliphoridae) embryos under cold temperature conditions: forensic implications. [PDF]
Cold temperatures significantly reduce survival in early‐stage Calliphora vicina embryos (0%–20% development). Calliphora vicina embryos of later developmental stages (40%–80% development), however, have shown high tolerance to cold temperatures, with very high survival rates.

A methodological approach to age estimation of the intra-puparial period of the forensically relevant blow fly Calliphora vicina via Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. [PDF]
Prediction of the intra‐puparial age of C. vicina was possible based on ATR‐FTIR‐absorption spectra. For age estimation, the full spectral range from 3700 to 600 cm−1 and the use of support vector machines resulted in the most accurate predictions.

Unexpected Evolutionary Divergence of Tachykinin-Positive Neurons Innervating the Central Complex in Hexapods. [PDF]
The central complex is a group of midline‐spanning neuropils in the brain of insects with a key role in goal‐directed orientation and navigation. Immunolabeling in 25 species, ranging from bristletails to flies, shows that neurons containing peptides of the tachykinin family of neuropeptides are present in most species studied.

The genome sequence of a bluebottle fly, Calliphora vicina Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830. [PDF]
We present a genome assembly from an individual female Calliphora vicina (bluebottle blow fly; Arthropoda; Insecta; Diptera; Calliphoridae). The genome sequence is 706.5 megabases in span. Most of the assembly is scaffolded into 6 chromosomal pseudomolecules, including the X sex chromosome ...

Novel use of a servosphere to study apodous insects: Investigation of blow fly post-feeding larval dispersal. [PDF]
A servosphere was used to record the speed, directionality and phototaxis of individual post‐feeding larvae of two species of blow fly (Diptera: Calliphoridae) on a smooth plastic surface over time. The servosphere rotates to compensate for the movement of an insect placed at its apex, thereby facilitating its unimpeded locomotion in any direction and ...

Calliphora vicina human myiasis: a case report [PDF]
A 30-year-old man with a history of cocaine and alcohol abuse attempted suicide by jumping into a canyon in the afternoon of a warm day of summer 2011. He was found alive after 24 h, with a contused and lacerated scalp wound, several hematomas and bruises all over the body.

Calliphora vicina Another invasive blowfly species in South Africa is the European species Calliphora vicina Meigen. C. vicina was first recorded in South Africa in 1965, when a specimen was collected in Johannesburg, and again in 1967 and 1969, in Benoni near Johannesburg International Airport.

Ecdysteroid receptors of the blowfly Calliphora vicina [PDF]
Ecdysteroids, the molting hormones of arthropods, act like vertebrate steroid hormones by binding to an intracellular receptor protein. We have recently isolated a protein from nuclei of blowfly larvae which has satisfied the requirements of an ecdysteroid receptor.

Incorporation of calliphorin into the cuticle of the developing blowfly, Calliphora vicina
The stage-specific appearance of calliphorin in cuticles of Calliphora vicina was analysed by sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and immunoblotting. The fate of the protein, injected into last instar larvae, was pursued by autoradiography of histological sections.
