The cestode community in northern fur seals (Callorhinus ursinus) on St. Paul Island, Alaska. [PDF]

open access: yesInt J Parasitol Parasites Wildl, 2015
The diversity and ecology of cestodes from the northern fur seals, Callorhinus ursinus (NFS), were examined using newly collected material from 756 humanely harvested subadult males between 2011 and 2014. NFSs were collected from five different haul-outs

Complete mitochondrial genome and phylogenetic analysis of Callorhinus ursinus: an endangered species from South Korea. [PDF]

open access: yesMitochondrial DNA B Resour, 2018
We present the complete mitochondrial genome and a phylogenetic analysis of Callorhinus ursinus, the northern fur seal, determined using Illumina next-generation sequencing (NGS) technology.

Isolation of Toxoplasma gondii from the placenta of northern fur seals (Callorhinus ursinus) and potential transplacental transmission of the parasite. [PDF]

open access: yesParasite
Toxoplasma gondii infects almost all warm-blooded animals, including marine mammals. Toxoplasmosis has been reported in wild and captive marine mammals in North America; however, no viable T. gondii strains have been isolated from northern fur seals.

Population structure as revealed by mtDNA and microsatellites in northern fur seals, Callorhinus ursinus, throughout their range. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS One, 2010
The northern fur seal (Callorhinus ursinus; NFS) is a widely distributed pinniped that has been shown to exhibit a high degree of philopatry to islands, breeding areas on an island, and even to specific segments of breeding areas.

Timing of Implantation in the Northern Fur Seal, Callorhinus ursinus [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Mammalogy, 1997
We describe the timing of three stages of implantation in the northern fur seal, Callorhinus ursinus . The median date of formation of the implantation chamber is 14 November (±1 SE = 2 days) ca. 237 days prepartum and 123 days postcopulation, of the amnion it is 22 November (±1 SE = 3 days), and of the embryo, it is 29 November (±1 SE = 3 days).

Pathobiology of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza A (H5N1 Clade 2.3.4.4b) Virus from Pinnipeds on Tyuleniy Island in the Sea of Okhotsk, Russia. [PDF]

open access: yesViruses
Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) A(H5N1) clade 2.3.4.4b has recently emerged as a major threat to wildlife, agriculture, and public health due to its expanding host range and the increasing frequency of spillover into mammals. In July–August 2023,

Morphology, molecular characterization and phylogeny of Bolbosoma nipponicum Yamaguti, 1939 (Acanthocephala: Polymorphidae), a potential zoonotic parasite of human acanthocephaliasis. [PDF]

open access: yesInt J Parasitol Parasites Wildl, 2022
Human acanthocephaliasis is a rare parasitic zoonosis mainly caused by acanthocephalans belonging to the genera Acanthocephalus, Bolbosoma, Corynosoma, Macracanthorhynchus, and Moniliformis.

Toxoplasma gondii infection in domestic cats and northern fur seals of the Pribilof Islands, Alaska. [PDF]

open access: yesInt J Parasitol Parasites Wildl
Disseminated toxoplasmosis has been described in northern fur seals, however little is known about the significance and epidemiology of this pathogen in free ranging populations.

Eye state asymmetry during aquatic unihemispheric slow wave sleep in northern fur seals (Callorhinus ursinus). [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS One, 2019
Unihemispheric slow wave sleep (USWS) is a unique form of sleep in which one brain hemisphere maintains low voltage electrical activity indicative of waking while the opposite exhibits slow wave electrical activity indicative of sleep. USWS is present in

Stable Isotope Models Predict Foraging Habitat of Northern Fur Seals (Callorhinus ursinus) in Alaska. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS One, 2015
We developed models to predict foraging habitat of adult female northern fur seals (Callorhinus ursinus) using stable carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) isotope values from plasma and red blood cells.
