Species, taxonomic, and functional group diversities of terrestrial mammals at risk under climate change and land‐use/cover change scenarios in Mexico

open access: yesGlobal Change Biology, Volume 28, Issue 23, Page 6992-7008, December 2022., 2022
We combined trait‐based and correlative approaches to assign risks to species, taxonomic orders, and functional groups of terrestrial mammals in Mexico, under climate change (CC) and land‐use/cover change (LUCC) scenarios. Risk scores were obtained as a function of vulnerability, exposure, and hazard, using the latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate

Roadkill patterns in Latin American birds and mammals

open access: yesGlobal Ecology and Biogeography, Volume 31, Issue 9, Page 1756-1783, September 2022., 2022
Abstract Aim Roads are a major threat for wildlife, degrading habitat and causing mortality via wildlife–vehicle collisions. In Latin America, the conjunction of high biodiversity and a rapidly expanding road network is reason for concern. We introduce an approach that combines species traits and habitat preferences to describe vulnerability and map ...

Arboreal camera trapping sheds light on seed dispersal of the world’s only epiphytic gymnosperm: Zamia pseudoparasitica

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 12, Issue 3, March 2022., 2022
We conducted arboreal camera trapping in three sites along the Talamanca Cordillera to assess for potential seed dispersal agents of Zamia pseudoparasitica, which is the only known gymnosperm species to be epiphytic and it is endemic to the mountains of Western Panama.

Vertical stratification of seed‐dispersing vertebrate communities and their interactions with plants in tropical forests

open access: yesBiological Reviews, Volume 96, Issue 2, Page 454-469, April 2021., 2021
ABSTRACT Vertical stratification (VS) is a widespread phenomenon in plant and animal communities in forests and a key factor for structuring their species richness and biodiversity, particularly in tropical forests. The organisms composing forest communities adjust and shape the complex three‐dimensional structure of their environment and inhabit a ...

New records of two marsupials (Didelphimorphia, Didelphidae) and conservation notes from southern Mexico [PDF]

open access: yesNeotropical Biology and Conservation
In Mexico opossums are difficult to find, and much of their natural history, ecology, and behavior are unknown. Through photographic and visual records, we obtained data on the presence of two species of marsupials in southern Mexico.

“Forever young”—Postnatal growth inhibition of the turbinal skeleton in brachycephalic dog breeds (Canis lupus familiaris)

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, Volume 304, Issue 1, Page 154-189, January 2021., 2021
Abstract In short snouted (brachycephalic) dogs (Canis lupus familiaris), several genetic mutations cause postnatal growth inhibition of the viscerocranium. Thus, for example, the pug keeps a snub nose like that observed in neonate dogs in general. However, little is known how far intranasal structures like the turbinal skeleton are also affected.

Four new reports of mammal species from Tayrona National Park, Colombia

open access: yesMammalogy Notes, 2016
This protected area is one of the most visited in the country. However, information regarding basic biodiversity inventories and especially for mammals is scarce (Jimenez-Alvarado et al. 2015).

Detection of Rickettsia spp. in ticks of wildlife fauna from Costa Rica: First report of Rickettsia rhipicephali in Central America

open access: yesTicks and Tick-Borne Diseases, 2023
In the past two decades, new species of Rickettsia have been detected and described worldwide, some of them considered pathogenic for humans. Although Costa Rica is considered a biodiversity hotspot, the knowledge about rickettsiae in sylvatic ecosystems
