Comparative growth performance of camel calves kept under station and farmer's conditions

open access: yesRevue d’Elevage et de Médecine Vétérinaire des Pays Tropicaux, 2000
A six-month study was undertaken on 14 camel calves aged 7 days to observe their growth performance. Five calves belonged to the Barani Production Research Institute (BLPRI), Pakistan, while the farmers living near BLPRI owned the rest.

Calf health and performance during receiving is not changed by fence-line preconditioning on flint hills range vs. drylot preconditioning [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Ranch-of-origin preconditioning can improve the welfare and performance of beef calves by decreasing the stress associated with weaning, transport, diet change, and commingling with other calves.

BLOC: Buildable and Linkable Organ on a Chip

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
We developed a “Buildable and Linkable Organ on a Chip” (BLOC) that can construct diverse microphysiological systems (MPSs). The BLOC is standardized to the same size and has one of the functions of “Culture,” “Control,” or “Analysis.” Users can freely configure various MPSs, including developing perfusion, cytotoxicity analysis, and biochemical ...

Characterization of the preweaned Holstein calf fecal microbiota prior to, during, and following resolution of uncomplicated gastrointestinal disease

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology
Little is known about shifts in the fecal microbiome of dairy calves preceding and following the incidence of gastrointestinal disease. The objective of this cohort study was to describe the fecal microbiome of preweaned dairy calves before, during, and ...

Calf mortality of semi-domesticated reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus) in the Finnish reindeer-herding area

open access: yesRangifer, 2013
During 1999-2008 calf mortality was studied in six reindeer-herding cooperatives in Northern Finland, where 3942 semi-domesticated reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus) calves were equipped with radio mortality collars.

Gait development in African elephant calves [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Most descriptions of elephant locomotion recognize only one gait: the lateral sequence walk. In contrast, several studies on African elephants (Loxodonta africana) have indicated that elephants use at least two other gaits: an amble and a trot.

Growth performance, carcase characteristics and meat quality of crossbred bulls and heifers from double-muscled Belgian Blue sires and Brown Swiss, Simmental and Rendena dams [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Growth, conformation, carcase and meat quality traits of crossbred calves obtained in the Alps from selected Belgian Blue sires (BB) and Brown Swiss (BS), Simmental (Si) and Rendena (Re) dams were studied, emphasising differences on dairy and dual ...

PRECONDITIONING BEEF CALVES: ARE EXPECTED PREMIUMS SUFFICIENT TO JUSTIFY THE PRACTICE? [PDF]

open access: yes
The concept of preconditioning calves has been around for a long time, yet adoption of the practice has been slow. Current trends in the beef industry likely will increase interest in preconditioning programs.

Material Selection and Geometric Design for Few‐filament Shape Memory Polymer Yarns for Force Generation

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
A custom shape memory polymer material selection process relates quantitative application criteria (e.g., compression garment yarns) to material characterization information. The selected materials are manufactured into yarn geometries, which expand the design space by creating structural stress‐strain profiles beyond the nominal material stress‐strain
