Fecundity of the Lagune Cow in Benin. Age at first calving and Calving Intervals

open access: yesRevue d’Elevage et de Médecine Vétérinaire des Pays Tropicaux, 2005
Data collected from 1987 to 2003 at the Samiondji farm in Benin were used to study the age at first calving (n = 200) and calving intervals (n = 805) in the Lagune cow. The age at first calving was 1373 ± 180 days (4 ± 0.5 years) and calving intervals were 426 ± 85 days (14 ± 2.8 months).

Monitoring African Megafauna in an Anthropogenic Landscape: A 15‐Year Case Study of the Vulnerable West African Giraffe

open access: yesAnimal Conservation, EarlyView.
We used pattern recognition software to correct misidentifications in a 15‐year photographic database of the last, vulnerable West African giraffe population in Niger. After revealing substantial methodological errors that had inflated population estimates by nearly 19%, we corrected individual encounter histories and applied capture‐mark‐recapture ...

Flow‐pattern evolution of the Scandinavian Ice Sheet indicated by the subglacial lineation record over Norway, Sweden and Finland

open access: yesBoreas, EarlyView.
We present a 25‐stage reconstruction of the ice‐flow pattern evolution of the Scandinavian Ice Sheet based on mapping and analysis of ~240 000 subglacial lineations and lineation fields across Norway, Sweden, Finland, and parts of NW Russia. Our reconstruction uses a glacial geomorphological inversion approach, in which we generated 611 individual ...

Environmentally adjusted productivity growth and shadow prices for dairy farms

open access: yesCanadian Journal of Agricultural Economics/Revue canadienne d'agroeconomie, EarlyView.
Abstract We estimate the environmentally adjusted productivity growth and shadow price for Ontario dairy farms. We use an input‐oriented directional distance function and farm‐level data from 2000 to 2020. First, we find that while GHG emissions per cow increase with higher milk yields, emission intensity decreases as milk yield per cow increases.

Application of Genomic Random Regression Models for Genetic Parameter Estimations of Female Fertility Traits in Different Parities in German Holsteins. [PDF]

open access: yesJ Anim Breed Genet
ABSTRACT The aim of the present study was to infer genetic (co) variance components and to estimate parity‐specific breeding values for the female fertility traits non‐return rate after 56 days, the interval from calving to first service and days open by applying random regression models on a time‐dependent parity scale. In this regard, we considered a

Estimates of genetic and phenotypic parameters for dairy traits in Friesian-Bunaji crossbreds [PDF]

open access: yes, 1995
Genetic and phenotypic parameters for dairy traits were computed using data on Friesian-Bunaji crossbred cows collected over a twenty-three year period (1967-1989) from the dairy herd of the National Animal Production Research Institute Shika, Zaria ...

Perceived costs as drivers of wildlife management preferences in rural Tanzanian communities

open access: yesConservation Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Effectively managing human–wildlife interactions is crucial for fostering coexistence on shared landscapes. Management options are most effective when aligned with the preferences of people directly affected by wildlife, yet little is known about how socioecological factors influence these preferences.

Genomic Analysis of Inbreeding Depression on Productive Traits in Rubia Galega Beef Cattle Breed

open access: yesJournal of Animal Breeding and Genetics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT In autochthonous livestock breeds with small populations, such as the Rubia Galega from Galicia (Spain), mating between relatives is common and can lead to inbreeding depression. Genomic inbreeding coefficients were estimated for 4984 animals using ~63,000 SNPs to assess inbreeding depression in four key traits: age at first calving (AFC) with

Milk production from grazed pasture in mountainous regions of Austria - impact of calving season [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
The influence of calving season on milk yield, lactation length, composition of the diet, reproduction and nutrient supply for pasture-based systems in a mountainous region of Austria was examined with thirty-three dairy cows on an organic farm.
