Economic Consequences of Different Calving Intervals

Acta Agriculturae Scandinavica, 1989
The study sought to answer the questions: when is the optimal time of conception for a given type of cow? and what is the economic cost of deviations from this optimum?

Crossbreeding effects on milk yield traits and calving interval in spring‐calving dairy cows

Journal of Animal Breeding and Genetics, 2010
SummaryThe aim of the study was to assess crossbreeding effects for 305‐day milk, fat, and protein yield and calving interval (CI) in Irish dairy cows (parities 1 to 5) calving in the spring from 2002 to 2006. Data included 188 927 records for production traits and 157 117 records for CI.

The length of the interval between calvings

The Journal of Agricultural Science, 1927
An attempt has been made to ascertain the best interval between calvings, so that the cow's average weekly yield over a long period may be at a maximum. It was only possible to consider the case of the “average cow,” but it is claimed that the general principle has been established, that cows should calve at intervals of not less than a year, and not ...

Marginal cost of the calving interval in beef cows is not uniform

Veterinary Record, 2018
To understand the profitability of reproduction management measures, an economic assessment based on a beef cow life simulation was proposed. It accounted for the discounted feeding costs of the dam and its calves for the different periods of their lives up to their sale and for the overall production from calves adjusted by mortality and culling.

Effect of lameness on the calving-to-conception interval in dairy cows

Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, 2001
Abstract Objective—To examine the relationship between lameness and the duration of the interval from calving to subsequent conception in lactating dairy cows. Design—Cohort study. Animals—837 dairy cows. Procedure—Cows affected with lameness were classified into 1 of 4 groups on the basis of types of disease or ...

Influence of suckling on calving interval of N'dama cows in the Gambia

Tropical Animal Health and Production, 1995
The inhibitory influence of the suckling stimulus on resumption of cyclicity post partum was elucidated for dairy cows by Oxenreider (1968) and for beef cattle by Short et al. (1972). In the traditionally managed herds in West Africa calves suckle their dam initially to stimulate milk let down, the cows are then milked and the calf is allowed to suckle

Breed differences in calving interval in the humid Mexican tropic

Tropical Animal Health and Production, 2009
The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of breed, breed and sex of the calf, farm, calving number (CN), type of calving, and their interactions on CI using records from four different beef breeds performing in the humid tropical environment of Mexico. The influence of these factors on CN was also evaluated. CI and CN varied with farm,

Trends in calving ages and calving intervals for Iranian Holsteins in Fars province, southern Iran

Tropical Animal Health and Production, 2009
To determine trends in calving ages and calving interval as measures of reproductive performance in Iranian Holsteins in Fars province, southern Iran during 2000-2005.Data about birth dates and previous calving dates for cows which calved between 21 March 2004 to 20 March 2005 were retrieved from the database of the Agricultural Jihad Organization of ...

Reproductive Performance in Cows with Extended Calving Interval*

Reproduction in Domestic Animals, 2000
Contents The effects of increased calving intervals on reproduction were studied in two herds. In Herd 1 cows were managed for 12‐ or 15‐month calving intervals and in Herd 2 for 12‐ or 18‐month intervals. Data from the study revealed that managing cows for a longer calving interval improved the fertility.

Evaluation of calving interval and calving date as measures of reproductive performance in a beef herd

Livestock Science, 1999
Abstract Calving interval is currently used as the measure of reproductive performance in South Africa and many other countries, but some authors have claimed that calving interval is not a suitable measure of reproductive performance, when cows are mated during a restricted breeding season.
