Machine and deep learning approaches to understand and predict habitat suitability for seabird breeding. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol, 2023
Understanding seabird breeding habitat selection and suitability is often complex due to the integration of land and sea features across multiple spatial scales. A complementarity approach between convolutional neural network (CNN) and random forest (RF) models was applied to predict and explain the selection pattern of tropical larids breeding ...

Late Cretaceous‐Recent Tectonostratigraphic Evolution of the Yucatan Back‐Arc Basin, Northern Caribbean Sea

open access: yesGeochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems, Volume 24, Issue 8, August 2023., 2023
Abstract The 110,000 km2 Yucatan Basin in the northern Caribbean Sea is critical for understanding the Late Cretaceous to Recent tectonic evolution of the Caribbean‐North American plate boundary. This study integrates gravity, magnetic, and a 5,500 km grid of 2D seismic data to carry out a tectonostratigraphic analysis of the Yucatan Basin.

Nimotuzumab Concurrent with Gemcitabine as First‐Line Treatment of Locally Advanced or Metastatic Pancreatic Adenocarcinoma

open access: yesBioMed Research International, Volume 2023, Issue 1, 2023., 2023
Background. Nimotuzumab exerts its antitumor effect (mainly antiproliferative, proapoptotic, and antiangiogenic) by blocking the epidermal growth factor receptor overexpressing between 30 and 95% in pancreatic tumors cells. Methods. A prospective, nonrandomized, uncontrolled, open‐label, and multicenter clinical trial was conducted to evaluate the ...

Fragile connections: Community computer networks, human infrastructures, and the consequences of their breakdown in Havana

open access: yesAmerican Anthropologist, Volume 124, Issue 2, Page 383-398, June 2022., 2022
Abstract To compensate for their lack of internet access, Cuban video game enthusiasts and programmers have built vast grassroots computer networks, the biggest of which, SNET (Street Network), at one point connected tens of thousands of households across Havana.

Regional Geophysics of the Caribbean and Northern South America: Implications for Tectonics

open access: yesGeochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems, Volume 23, Issue 5, May 2022., 2022
Abstract The Caribbean plate is an enclosed oceanic basin whose formation and evolution are controversial. In the most commonly accepted model, the Caribbean plate is mainly composed of the Caribbean Large Igneous Province (CLIP) and the buoyant characteristic of this oceanic plateau resisted subduction and allowed an eastward migration to its present ...

International Population Study in Spain, Cuba, and the United States of Attitudes Toward Organ Donation Among the Cuban Population

open access: yesLiver Transplantation, Volume 28, Issue 4, Page 581-592, April 2022., 2022
Cuban immigrants constitute an important group in both the United States and Spain, with different behaviors toward organ donation having been described among the different Latin American nationalities. We analyzed the attitude toward organ donation among the Cuban populations in Cuba, Spain, and Florida.

Review of Geochronologic and Geochemical Data of the Greater Antilles Volcanic Arc and Implications for the Evolution of Oceanic Arcs

open access: yesGeochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems, Volume 23, Issue 4, April 2022., 2022
Abstract The Greater Antilles islands of Cuba, Hispaniola, Puerto Rico and Jamaica plus the Virgin Islands host fragments of the fossil convergent margin that records Cretaceous subduction (operated for about 90 m.y.) of the American plates beneath the Caribbean plate and ensuing arc‐continent collision in Late Cretaceous‐Eocene time.

Nimotuzumab in the Treatment of Inoperable Esophageal Tumors of Epithelial Origin

open access: yesJournal of Oncology, Volume 2022, Issue 1, 2022., 2022
Background. Nimotuzumab is a humanized monoclonal antibody that targets the epidermal growth factor receptor. It was approved in Cuba for the indication of inoperable malignant tumors of the esophagus of epithelial origin. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the safety, overall and progression‐free survival, clinical response, and quality of life,

Fine‐Scale Bioregionalization in a Complex Island System: A Freshwater Perspective From the Greater Antilles

open access: yesJournal of Biogeography, Volume 53, Issue 1, January 2026.
ABSTRACT Aim The isolated nature of islands makes them particularly vulnerable to climate change. The freshwater fishes of the Greater Antilles remain understudied and are further threatened by habitat fragmentation and the introduction of exotic invasive species.
