The South American Camelids: An Expanded and Corrected Edition [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
One of the most significant differences between the New World’s major areas of high culture is that Mesoamerica had no beasts of burden and wool, while the Andes had both.

Golgi enzymes are retrieved from the plasma membrane to the trans‐Golgi network

open access: yesFEBS Letters, Volume 600, Issue 20, Page 3051-3072, October 2026.
Golgi enzymes are traditionally considered resident proteins retained within the Golgi apparatus. Here, we demonstrate that a subset transiently reaches the cell surface and is subsequently retrieved to the trans‐Golgi network via retrograde transport. Using a nanobody‐based toolkit, we uncover a dynamic trafficking cycle of several Golgi enzymes.

Reproduction in South American Camelids [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Six species of "camels" exist in the world today: the llama (Lama glama) and alpaca (Lama pacos) were domesticated in South America 4-5 thousand years ago, while the guanaco (Lama guanicoe) and vicuna (Vicugna vicugna) still exist in the wild.

Humans are not unique: difficult birth is common in placental mammals

open access: yesBiological Reviews, Volume 101, Issue 5, Page 2214-2239, October 2026.
ABSTRACT Human childbirth is widely presumed to be uniquely difficult and dangerous compared to birth in other mammals. Tight fetopelvic proportions can result in obstructed labour and contribute to high rates of maternal and neonatal mortality. Ideas summarised under the ‘obstetrical dilemma’ have contributed to this assumption by explaining difficult

Advancing In Vivo Chimeric Antigen Receptor T‐Cell Engineering to Accelerate Clinical Translation

open access: yesMedComm, Volume 7, Issue 10, October 2026.
In vivo CAR‐T cell generation directly engineers endogenous T cells using pre‐manufactured gene delivery vectors that target T cells and deliver CAR‐encoding genetic material. The resulting CAR‐T cells expand in vivo and mediate antigen‐specific cytotoxicity.

Nanobodies as next‐generation targeting platforms: From discovery technologies to translational biomedicine

open access: yesVIEW, Volume 7, Issue 5, October 2026.
Nanobodies, derived from the variable domains of camelid heavy‐chain‐only antibodies, have emerged as transformative biomedical tools due to their nanoscale size, exceptional stability, and unique capacity to recognize cryptic epitopes. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the field, outlining the structural and biochemical features of ...

Safety and efficacy of a feed additive consisting of a tincture derived from the aerial parts of Filipendula ulmaria (L.) Maxim. (meadowsweet tincture) for use in all animal species (FEFANA asbl)

open access: yesEFSA Journal, Volume 24, Issue 10, October 2026.
Abstract Following a request from the European Commission, EFSA was asked to deliver a scientific opinion on the safety and efficacy of a tincture from the aerial parts of Filipendula ulmaria (L.) Maxim. (meadowsweet tincture) when used as a sensory additive in feed and/or in water for drinking for all animal species. The additive under assessment is a

Recumbent New World Camelids: General Diagnostics and Types of Recumbency

open access: yes, 2000
Because New World camelids (NWCs) are often recumbent on presentation, practitioners should be familiar with the common causes and complications of recumbency. This article classifies recumbency as intermittent, preferred, or constant.
