Comparison of survey techniques on detection of northern flying squirrels

open access: yesWildlife Society Bulletin, 2016
The ability to detect a species is central to the success of monitoring for conservation and management purposes, especially if the species is rare or endangered.

Are camera traps a reliable method for estimating activity patterns? A case study comparing technologies for estimating brown hyaena activity curves

open access: yesRemote Sensing in Ecology and Conservation, 2021
Camera traps and radio‐tags are both frequently and widely used sampling methods for deriving wildlife activity patterns. While radio‐tags continuously monitor a limited number of tagged individuals, camera traps have the potential to monitor all ...

Low‐Angle Grain Boundaries and Re‐Segregation in Single‐Crystalline Ni‐Base Superalloys

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This work demonstrates that Re‐segregation at low‐angle grain boundaries (LAGBs) in Ni‐base superalloys is influenced by misorientation angle. Advanced microscopy and atom probe tomography reveal that higher misorientation angles increases Re‐segregation.

System for analyzing data from camera traps based on a two-stage neural network approach for operational remote monitoring [PDF]

open access: yesITM Web of Conferences
Camera traps are a widely used tool for monitoring wildlife with minimal human intervention. Their number can amount to several hundred, and the accumulated volume can reach several terabytes.

Density Estimation of Unmarked Populations Using Camera Traps in Heterogeneous Space

open access: yesWildlife Society Bulletin, 2020
Camera traps are commonly used to monitor animal populations, but statistical estimators of density from camera‐trap data for species that cannot be individually identified are still in development, and few models take space use into account.

The experience of low-resource fauna research by using camera traps

open access: yesTheriologia Ukrainica, 2021
The tasks of managing animal populations (conservation, exploitation, and control) require reliable initial information for their implementation. This information includes a number of parameters: spatial distribution, annual and daily cycles of activity,

Estimating Abundance of Adult Trachemys scripta with Camera Traps: Accuracy, Precision and Probabilities of Capture for a Closed Population [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Low and variable rates of capture are common problems when estimating abundance of freshwater turtles with capture-mark-recapture (CMR). We speculated camera traps would allow us to obtain reliable estimates of abundance by re-sighting marked Trachemys ...

Wild dogs at stake: deforestation threatens the only Amazon endemic canid, the short-eared dog (Atelocynus microtis) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
The persistent high deforestation rate and fragmentation of the Amazon forests are the main threats to their biodiversity. To anticipate and mitigate these threats, it is important to understand and predict how species respond to the rapidly changing ...

Economical crowdsourcing for camera trap image classification [PDF]

open access: yesRemote Sensing in Ecology and Conservation, 2018
AbstractCamera trapping is widely used to monitor mammalian wildlife but creates large image datasets that must be classified. In response, there is a trend towards crowdsourcing image classification. For high‐profile studies of charismatic faunas, many classifications can be obtained per image, enabling consensus assessments of the image contents. For

Interaction of Ladle Slag With Varying SiO2 Content and Recyclate‐Based MgO–C Refractories

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Ladle slags (CaO/Al2O3 = 1) with 1–20 wt% SiO2 were investigated in contact with industrial MgO–C refractories fabricated from fresh magnesia and 50 wt% recyclate. The sessile drop method at 1600°C reveals intensive gas formation, delayed slag infiltration in recyclate‐based samples, and, under high‐SiO2 slag, formation of a dense MgAl2O4‐rich ...
