Development of Aluminum Scandium Alloys for Hydrogen Storage Valves

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Different aluminum alloy series and various aluminum‐scandium alloys with differing Sc and Zr levels are evaluated for use in hydrogen storage valve production. The alloys undergo hardness testing, optical microscopy, and tensile strength analysis, with hardening behavior studied under varying conditions.

Advancing Wildfire‐Retardant Materials: Engineering Strategies for Direct and Indirect Suppression

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Here, the evolution, ecological impact, and performance of current fire‐retardant materials and suppression strategies are reviewed, offering an engineering perspective to address existing challenges and propose pathways for the development of more effective, scalable, and sustainable solutions to meet the demands of a changing climate. Wildfires cause

Developing teaching and learning programmes for new lecturers in higher education to allow for exploration of the link between research and teaching: a collaborative UK/Canadian project [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
This is an ESCalate development project led by Lisa Lucas of the University of Bristol and completed in 2009. It looks at teaching and learning programmes for new lecturers in the UK and Canada, specifically the link between research and teaching.

Encapsulating Laser‐Induced Graphene to Preserve its Electrical Properties and Enhance its Mechanical Robustness

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
It is demonstrated that laser‐induced graphene (LIG) can be encapsulated while preserving its electrical conductivity and enhancing its mechanical properties. Unlike previous encapsulation attempts, the optimal conditions described here result in sheet resistance of ≈2 Ω sq−1, resistance increase of only 5% upon encapsulation, and vastly improved ...

Are good jobs disappearing in Canada? [PDF]

open access: yes
Based on their analysis of changes in the share of jobs falling in certain real wage categories over 1997-2004, the authors suggest that well-paid jobs ($25 an hour or more) are not disappearing in Canada. Morissette and Johnson also find little evidence

Ultrahigh Piezoelectricity in Truss‐Based Ferroelectric Ceramics Metamaterials

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, Volume 35, Issue 12, March 18, 2025.
By leveraging the unique combination of polarization direction and loading state, ultrahigh piezoelectricity is achieved through careful tuning of the relative density and scaling ratio in truss‐based ferroelectric metamaterials. This approach enables the simultaneous realization of extremely high piezoelectric constants and ultralow dielectric ...
