Feet first: Adaptive growth in magellanic penguin chicks

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, 2021
Growing animals should allocate their limited resources in ways that maximize survival. Seabird chicks must balance the growth of features and fat reserves needed to survive on land with those needed to successfully fledge and survive at sea.

Formation of modules in a computational model of embryogeny [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
An investigation is conducted into the effects of a complex mapping between genotype and phenotype upon a simulated evolutionary process. A model of embryogeny is utilised to grow simple French flag like patterns.

Micro and Nanostructural Diversity of Lizard Osteoderm Capping Tissue in Relation to Mechanical Performance

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study shows that lizard osteoderm capping tissue is a hyper‐mineralized hydroxyapatite layer consistently covering the superficial osteoderm surface in those species studied here, yet it varies greatly in morphology, nanostructure, and mechanical performance across species.

Analysis of lambing distribution in the Ripollesa sheep breed. II. Environmental and genetic sources of variation

open access: yesAnimal, 2019
Seasonal reproduction patterns are typically observed in small ruminants and are a major limitation for production efficiency in most meat- and dairy-type production systems.

Selective pressures on genomes in molecular evolution [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
We describe the evolution of macromolecules as an information transmission process and apply tools from Shannon information theory to it. This allows us to isolate three independent, competing selective pressures that we term compression, transmission ...

Overcoming Debye Length Limitations in Electrolyte‐Gated Transistor Biosensors Using Nanoscale‐Grooved Oxide Semiconductors Fabricated by Thermal Nanoimprint Lithography

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Nanoscale‐grooved indium gallium oxide (IGO) semiconductors, patterned via thermal nanoimprint lithography (NIL) using CD/DVD templates, are integrated into electrolyte‐gated transistor biosensors to overcome Debye length limitations. Precisely engineered concave–convex nanostructures modulate local electrostatic potentials, extend the effective Debye ...

Capturing indirect genetic effects on phenotypic variability: Competition meets canalization

open access: yesEvolutionary Applications, 2022
Phenotypic variability of a genotype is relevant both in natural and domestic populations. In the past two decades, variability has been studied as a heritable quantitative genetic trait in its own right, often referred to as inherited variability or ...

Interoceptive robustness through environment-mediated morphological development

open access: yes, 2018
Typically, AI researchers and roboticists try to realize intelligent behavior in machines by tuning parameters of a predefined structure (body plan and/or neural network architecture) using evolutionary or learning algorithms.

Clitoral development in the mouse and human. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
The goal of this report is (a) to provide the first detailed description of mouse clitoral development, and (b) to compare mouse and human clitoral development.

Renal Subcapsular xenografing of human fetal external genital tissue - A new model for investigating urethral development. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
In this paper, we introduce our novel renal subcapsular xenograft model for the study of human penile urethral and clitoral development. We grafted fifteen intact fetal penes and clitorides 8-11 weeks fetal age under the renal capsules of gonadectomized ...
