Utilization of TRISO fuel with reactor grade plutonium in CANDU reactors
Nuclear Engineering and Design, 2010Abstract Large quantities of plutonium have been accumulated in the nuclear waste of civilian LWRs and CANDU reactors. Reactor grade plutonium and heavy water moderator can give a good combination with respect to neutron economy. On the other hand, TRISO type fuel can withstand very high fuel burn-up levels.

CANDU reactors with reactor grade plutonium/thorium carbide fuel
Kerntechnik, 2011Abstract Reactor grade (RG) plutonium, accumulated as nuclear waste of commercial reactors can be re-utilized in CANDU reactors. TRISO type fuel can withstand very high fuel burn ups. On the other hand, carbide fuel would have higher neutronic and thermal performance than oxide fuel.

Improvements of the reactivity devices modeling for the advanced CANDU reactor
Annals of Nuclear Energy, 2008Abstract In the context of the ACR™ (Advanced CANDU Reactor), 3D transport calculations are required in order to simulate the reactivity devices located perpendicularly to the fuel channels. The computational scheme that is usually used for CANDU-6 and ACR reactors is based on a simplified supercell geometry in which the fuel clusters and devices are

Ontario to Mothball Two CANDU Reactors
Science, 2005NUCLEAR POWERFacing a $1.6-billion repair bill, the government of Ontario decided this month to mothball two 540-megawatt Canada Deuterium-Uranium (CANDU) nuclear reactors more than a decade before their projected retirement date, leading to questions about the future of CANDU.

Qualification of Reactor Physics Toolset for a Thorium-Fuelled CANDU Reactor
18th International Conference on Nuclear Engineering: Volume 2, 2010AECL has developed enhanced versions of the reactor physics computer codes for analysis of CANDU® reactors and the ACR-1000™. The central codes that comprise the analysis toolset are WIMS-AECL (a lattice code), RFSP (a core code) and MCNP5 (a Monte Carlo code). The toolset, with ENDF/B-VI nuclear data, has been validated for application to the ACR-1000

ROP margin improvement options for CANDU reactors
Annals of Nuclear Energy, 2015Abstract Over the past few years, Candu Energy Inc. (a wholly owned subsidiary of SNC-Lavalin Inc., which acquired the assets of Atomic Energy of Canada Limited’s Commercial Reactor Division) has been continuously developing and evaluating various options to improve the regional overpower protection (ROP) margin in aged CANDU 600 MW (CANDU 6 ...

The CANDU Reactor System: An Appropriate Technology
Science, 1978CANDU power reactors are characterized by the combination of heavy water as moderator and pressure tubes to contain the fuel and coolant. Their excellent neutron economy provides the simplicity and low costs of once-through natural-uranium fueling. Future benefits include the prospect of a near-breeder thorium fuel cycle to provide security of fuel ...

The Slowing-Down Spectrum in a CANDU-Type Reactor
Nuclear Science and Engineering, 1963The slowing-down spectrum in a CANDU-type reactor cell was studied using resonance activation techniques. The measurements covered the energy range 1.46 to 367 ev. The effects of replacing the heavy water coolant with mixtures of light and heavy water and light water were studied. Measurements were also made in a channel without fuel clusters.

In Reactor Deformation of Candu Pressure Tubes
Canadian Metallurgical Quarterly, 1979Abstract The mechanisms of irradiation growth and irradiation creep are described and their effect on the in-service deformation of pressure tubes in CANDU reactors is discussed. Irradiation growth and creep are shown to be influenced by the metallurgical structure of the pressure tube.

CANDU technology for Generation III+ and IV reactors
Nuclear Engineering and Design, 2006Abstract Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) is the original developer of the CANDU ® reactor, one of the three major commercial power reactor designs now used throughout the world. For over 60 years, AECL has continued to evolve the CANDU design from the CANDU prototypes in the 1950s and 1960s through to the second-generation reactors now in ...
