The Economics of the Candu Reactor

1984
The purpose of this chapter is to: 1. Discuss the cost of producing electricity from CANDU-Pressurized Heavy Water (PHW) nuclear generating units. 2. Present actual cost experience of CANDU units in Ontario Hvdro. 3. Compare CANDU cost experience with fossil (coal) experience in Ontario Hydro. 4.

Optimal Thorium-Fueled CANDU Nuclear Reactor Fuel Management

Nuclear Technology, 1985
The optimization of in-core fuel management for a thorium-fueled Canada deuterium uranium (CANDU) nuclear reactor was investigated by minimizing the total refueling rate at equilibrium with respect to criticality and power-peaking constraints. The computer code ASTERIX was written to solve the optimization problem, using a steepest descent technique ...

Qualification of Reactor Physics Toolset for a Thorium-Fuelled CANDU Reactor

18th International Conference on Nuclear Engineering: Volume 2, 2010
AECL has developed enhanced versions of the reactor physics computer codes for analysis of CANDU® reactors and the ACR-1000™. The central codes that comprise the analysis toolset are WIMS-AECL (a lattice code), RFSP (a core code) and MCNP5 (a Monte Carlo code). The toolset, with ENDF/B-VI nuclear data, has been validated for application to the ACR-1000

Thorium as a nuclear fuel for CANDU reactors

The Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering, 1975
AbstractThe reasons for the attractiveness of thorium as a fuel for CANDU reactors are discussed. By the use of thorium fuels it is shown that the amount of energy that can be extracted from nuclear fuel resources can be increased substantially. Cumulative savings in nuclear fuel requirements are estimated for a number of situations. The thorium fuel ...

In Reactor Deformation of Candu Pressure Tubes

Canadian Metallurgical Quarterly, 1979
Abstract The mechanisms of irradiation growth and irradiation creep are described and their effect on the in-service deformation of pressure tubes in CANDU reactors is discussed. Irradiation growth and creep are shown to be influenced by the metallurgical structure of the pressure tube.

Advanced CANDU reactors axial xenon oscillation controllability validation

Annals of Nuclear Energy, 2016
Abstract Advanced CANDU reactor fuel channel assembly MCNP model with top, bottom, and four lattice sides reflecting boundaries is used to generate a conservative flat axial neutron flux distribution for the 135 Xe oscillation controllability analyses.

Power Transient in a CANDU Reactor

1978
In this report, the effectiveness of a proposed Shutoff Rod System a CANDU Reactor was investigated. A full core simulation was done, to study the neutronic power transient following a change in coolant conditions.

The CANDU Reactor System: An Appropriate Technology.

Science (New York, N.Y.), 2010
CANDU power reactors are characterized by the combination of heavy water as moderator and pressure tubes to contain the fuel and coolant. Their excellent neutron economy provides the simplicity and low costs of once-through natural-uranium fueling. Future benefits include the prospect of a near-breeder thorium fuel cycle to provide security of fuel ...

Uranium use in CANDU reactors—review and prospect

Canadian Metallurgical Quarterly, 1969
AbstractA co-operative governmentindustry development program launched in the late 1950s has generated in Canadian industry the capability to produce high-quality uranium oxide fuel bundles at all-inclusive prices of less than $50 per kg U. The direct consequence is that fuel cycle costs in heavy-water-moderated CANDU power reactors are the lowest of ...
