Nineteen species of wild canids interact with humans in the Americas in different ways. The zooarchaeological record of burials, shifts in diet, abundance at sites, and ethnological information document the various kinds of interactions of canids and humans in the Americas. However, none of these native canid species has been domesticated.

Wild canids, domestic dogs and their pathogens in Southeast Brazil: disease threats for canid conservation [PDF]
Wild canids are under many pressures, including habitat loss, fragmentation and disease. The current lack of information on the status of wildlife health may hamper conservation efforts in Brazil. In this paper, we examined the prevalence of canine pathogens in 21 free-ranging wild canids, comprising 12 Cerdocyon thous (crab-eating fox), 7 Chrysocyon ...

INFLAMMATORY ARTHRITIS IN CANIDS: SPONDYLOARTHROPATHY
Journal of Zoo and Wildlife Medicine, 2001Spondyloarthropathy was observed in 25 (2.8%) of 895 preserved canid museum specimens and was catalogued by species. The associated skeletal alterations in canids are indistinguishable grossly and physiologically from those in humans with spondyloarthropathy of the reactive type.

Behavioral studies using anestrous female beagles, and olfactory tests with dogs in the absence of females, indicate that methylp-hydroxybenzoate cannot be considered a key sexual attractant for male beagles, even though this compound has been found in estrous vaginal secretions.

The classification of acoustic signs is related to four aspects, the phonetic, the syntactic, the semantic, and the pragmatic. Canid vocalizations can be subdivided into 10 classes, which are described. The meaning and functions are considered in respect to releasing functions, control functions (in the cybernetic sense) and in relation to metabolism ...

The tail gland of canids is a hepatoid glandular organ surrounded and penetrated by powerful hair erector muscles squeezing out its lipoprotein secretion onto the skin surface. The gland is most developed in solitary species (Arctic, red, and corsac foxes) where it is represented by powerful glandular layer with large secretion containers—cisterns.
