Angiocardiography in Canine Heartworm Disease
American Journal of Veterinary Research, 1970SUMMARY To study heartworm disease (Dirofilana immitis), angiocardiograms (acg) and radiograms were made of 34 infected and 14 normal dogs. Comparison was made of normal and abnormal selective right and left ventriculograms. The following successive phases seemed to be characteristic of the disease and were cumulative: a) Linear lucencies (adult ...

COYOTES AND CANINE HEARTWORM IN CALIFORNIA
Journal of Wildlife Diseases, 1980Adult Dirofilaria immitis were found in the hearts of 43 of 115 coyotes (Canis latrans) trapped within a 50 km radius of the El Dorado County seat. Of mature coyotes, 45% were positive, with worm numbers averaging 9.0 in females and 16.2 in males. D. immitis microfilariae occurred in the peripheral blood and in lung smears.

Risk Factors Associated with Canine Heartworm Infection
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, 1980SUMMARY Risk factors associated with canine heartworm infection were determined by screening medical records from the Veterinary Medical Data Program of June 1964–May 1976. Data represented were from 14 colleges and schools of veterinary medicine in the United States and Canada. A total of 3,655 dogs were infected. Intact male dogs 4 to 7 years old and

SUMMARY An interaction between blood platelets and adult heartworms was examined in vitro. Surfaces of glutaraldehyde-fixed heartworms, which were taken from infected dogs, washed, and incubated in platelet-rich plasma (prp), were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy.

Serologic pattern of canine heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) infection
American Journal of Veterinary Research, 1984SUMMARY A total of 602 dogs at the Louisiana State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital were tested for antibodies to Dirofilaria immitis by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (elisa), using a purified adult dirofilaria-derived antigen. Most dogs also were evaluated for heartworm infection by a complete wbc count and a Knott test for circulating ...

Incidence of canine heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) in Malaysia
Veterinary Record, 1976A total of 764 adult dogs were examined for microfilariae and adult worms of D immitis and 197 (25-8 per cent) were found to be infected. Direct blood examinations revealed only 47-2 per cent of the infected dogs whereas the blood serum examination detected 57-8 per cent of them.

Surgical Removal of Canine Heartworms, Using Cardiopulmonary Bypass
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, 1973SUMMARY Adult heartworms were removed from the right ventricle and pulmonary artery in 9 dogs by means of cardiopulmonary bypass. None of the dogs had clinical signs of heartworm infection prior to surgery; the surgical procedure was performed solely to determine its practicability.

Canine heartworms in experimental cardiac and pulmonary surgery
Journal of Surgical Research, 1966Summary Upon receiving an intravenous extract of Dirofilaria immitis , 75% of dogs with microfilaria of Dirofilaria immitis and 21% of dogs without demonstrable microfilaria had an anaphylactoid reaction. This response is typical of the “homologous blood reaction.” Of available dogs in the Jackson area 55% had microfilaria antibodies in the blood ...

Cutaneous Lesions Associated With Canine Heartworm Infection
Veterinary Dermatology, 1992Abstract— The clinical and histopathological features of five cases of a chronic pruritic dermatitis in dogs infected with Dirofilaria immitis were analysed. Clinically, the cutaneous syndrome was characterized by a papulo‐nodular and/or ulcerative non‐specific dermatitis, responsive to antiparasitic treatment.

Hepatic cytoprotection in treatment of canine heartworm
Proceedings, annual meeting, Electron Microscopy Society of America, 1989Thiacetarsamide is an arsenic-containing drug used in the treatment of heartworm in dogs. The effective antihelmintic dose is toxic to the host animal. Acetylcysteine decreases the hepatotoxicity of some compounds by forming a conjugate with toxic metabolites of the compound.
