Capillaria hepatica (NEMATODA: TRICHURIDAE) IN A COYOTE (Canis latrans)

Capillaria hepatica (Bancroft, 1893) infection was diagnosed on the basis of histopathology in a juvenile female coyote (Canis latrans) from southern Saskatchewan. This is the first report of C. hepatica from this host and the second record of this parasite from a wild carnivore.

EXPERIMENTAL SALMON POISONING DISEASE IN JUVENILE COYOTES (CANIS LATRANS)

Salmon poisoning disease (SPD) was experimentally induced in juvenile coyotes (Canis latrans). The disease was lethal in 11 of 12 coyotes within 15 days after inoculation with 1,000 or 4,000 metacercariae of Nanophyetus salmincola. Clinical manifestations of the disease included lymph node enlargement, anorexia, pyrexia, diarrhea and death.

Coyotes (Canis latrans) are predators of livestock. Current management programs, primarily lethal control, are ineffective for long-term management of predation. Controlling reproduction of coyotes may reduce depredations if territory fidelity is maintained by breeding pairs.

Abstract From November 1977 to March 1978 we recorded the scent-marking behaviour of free-ranging coyotes in southern Quebec. Fourteen animals were marked by foot-pad ablation, which made it possible to recognize individuals' tracks in the snow and therefore to relate scent-marking with social organization. Long-Distance Vocalizations of Coyotes (Canis latrans)

Evoked and spontaneous long-distance vocalizations of wild coyotes ( Canis latrans ) were studied in Texas and Oklahoma from June 1972 to August 1974. Sonagrams of tape recordings showed that adult coyotes produced two basic sounds—the bark and the flat howl. These sounds were given by animals in both single and group situations.
