The response of canopy height diversity to natural disturbances in two temperate forest landscapes

open access: yesLandscape Ecology, 2020
Structural diversity strongly influences habitat quality and the functioning of forest ecosystems. An important driver of the variation in forest structures are disturbances.

Urban Heat Island in the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East: Multi‐City Approach in Regional Climate Modelling

open access: yesInternational Journal of Climatology, EarlyView.
This study presents that the WRF model, coupled with bulk urban parameterization, effectively captures the summer urban heat island (UHI) patterns across the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East, showing stronger night‐time surface UHIs (5°C–6°C) and daytime surface cool islands (up to 12.5°C).

Performance evaluation and improvement of ICESat-2 and GEDI forest canopy height retrievals in Northeast China

open access: yesGIScience & Remote Sensing
The advent of new-generation spaceborne Light Detection and Ranging (lidar) systems, exemplified by the Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite-2 (ICESat-2) and Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI), has opened up an unprecedented opportunity ...

Integrated characterization of Greek fennel genotypes through morpho‐agronomical characteristics, yield components and phytochemical compounds

open access: yesJSFA reports, Volume 5, Issue 3, Page 91-103, March 2025.
Abstract Background Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare Mill.) is a widely cultivated vegetable and aromatic‐medicinal plant. In this research, field studies assessed 12 fennel genotypes of diverse origin, comprising 10 Greek accessions and two European commercial varieties, focusing on their morpho‐agronomical traits, phenolic compounds and antioxidant ...

Tracking Southern China’s Forest Growth from Space

open access: yesJournal of Remote Sensing
Forest canopy height reflects the vertical structure of forests and gives indications on the growth capacity of trees and the level of forest biomass.

Carbon Stock and Environmental Variations of Typical Plantations in Mufu Mountain in Hubei Province, China

open access: yesLand Degradation &Development, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Forest ecosystems play a critical role in the global carbon cycle. As a significant terrestrial carbon sink, plantations exhibit carbon stock patterns that are shaped by tree species composition, stand structure, and environmental conditions. Here, we investigated typical plantation types in the Mufu Mountain, Hubei Province.

Wildfires' Cost for Societal Welfare: Economic Evaluation of Forestry Ecosystem Services Losses in Southern Italy

open access: yesLand Degradation &Development, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Forest ecosystem services (ESs) are garnering increasing public attention as awareness grows regarding society's fundamental dependence on them for well‐being. Forest fires, one of the major disturbances of ESs, are becoming more frequent and destructive, exacerbated in part by climate change.

Use of GEDI Signal and Environmental Parameters to Improve Canopy Height Estimation over Tropical Forest Ecosystems in Mayotte Island

open access: yesCanadian Journal of Remote Sensing
Canopy height is a fundamental parameter for describing forest ecosystems. GEDI is a spaceborne LiDAR system that was designed to measure vegetation’s vertical structure at a global scale.

Spatiotemporal Fire Patterns and Post‐fire Forest Change in Peru (2000–2021)

open access: yesLand Degradation &Development, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Fire is increasingly more frequent and severe in many tropical regions, leading to significant forest loss, diminished biodiversity, and reduced Nature's contributions to people (NCPs). In this study, we analyzed the spatiotemporal patterns of fire in Peru and its regions, focusing on: (1) burned area, (2) size, and (3) number of fires, using ...

Predicting potential Arctic kelp distribution and lower‐depth biomass from seafloor irradiance

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography: Methods, EarlyView.
Abstract Kelps have an extensive distribution in Arctic coastal waters. However, quantifying their role in the Arctic food web and carbon cycle is challenged by the scarcity of documented geographical distribution, standing stocks and production. Here we present a framework based on an empirical function to predict the potential kelp distribution and ...
