ClimUAd: Observation‐Based Gridded Daily Climate Data for Ukraine, 1946–2020

open access: yesGeoscience Data Journal, Volume 12, Issue 2, April 2025.
An observation‐based daily gridded climate dataset (ClimUAd) was developed for the territory of Ukraine for the period of 1946–2020. Four essential climate variables were included: atmospheric precipitation, minimum, mean and maximum air temperature.

Spatio‐temporal patterns of carnivore guild related to their prey in a Mediterranean landscape

open access: yesJournal of Zoology, Volume 325, Issue 3, Page 242-253, March 2025.
Small mammal populations fluctuate significantly in abundance over time, affecting the entire food web. Using a multi‐season occupancy analysis, we examined the spatio‐temporal patterns of Mediterranean mesocarnivores—common genet, stone marten and red fox—focusing on the factors that influence their occupancy dynamics, particularly small mammal ...

Phylogenetic conservatism in the relationship between functional and demographic characteristics in Amazon tree taxa

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 39, Issue 1, Page 181-198, January 2025.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Leaf and wood functional traits of trees are related to growth, reproduction, and survival, but the degree of phylogenetic conservatism in these relationships is largely unknown.

Tree species abundance changes at the edges of their climatic distribution: An interplay between climate change, plant traits and forest management

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 112, Issue 12, Page 2785-2797, December 2024.
Our research emphasizes the crucial impact of historical forest management in shaping the current distribution of tree species. After controlling for the effect of forest management, climate change directly influenced tree demographics, favouring species based on their traits.

Increasing temperature threatens post‐fire auto‐successional dynamics of a Mediterranean obligate seeder

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 112, Issue 12, Page 2929-2943, December 2024.
Climate change is likely to interfere with the post‐fire regeneration dynamics of obligate seeders by shortening the temporal window of opportunities for emergence and by enhancing the bottleneck effects throughout the recruitment process in the early phases of pine demographic recovery.

Land use determines Mediterranean ecosystems' multifunctionality more than plant richness or habitat composition

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 61, Issue 3, Page 476-488, March 2024.
Our results highlight the importance of remnant native forest to provide multiple ecosystem functions and the potential to restore them and complement these uses with sustainable agriculture. By merging landscape and ecosystem approaches we provide specific numbers regarding the proportion that each land use should have in order to maximise ...

Future climate‐induced distribution shifts in a sexually dimorphic key predator of the Southern Ocean

open access: yesGlobal Change Biology, Volume 30, Issue 3, March 2024.
Climate change poses challenges for sexually dimorphic species, such as the Antarctic fur seal, where males are larger than females. By tracking individuals from both sexes, we assessed their responses to current environmental conditions and projected their future responses using various climate models. Findings reveal a sex‐skewed impact: females face

Evaluating plant lineage losses and gains in temperate forest understories: a phylogenetic perspective on climate change and nitrogen deposition

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 241, Issue 5, Page 2287-2299, March 2024.
Summary Global change has accelerated local species extinctions and colonizations, often resulting in losses and gains of evolutionary lineages with unique features. Do these losses and gains occur randomly across the phylogeny? We quantified: temporal changes in plant phylogenetic diversity (PD); and the phylogenetic relatedness (PR) of lost and ...
