Number and distribution of capillaries as determinants of myocardial oxygen tension

American Journal of Physiology-Legacy Content, 1964
Blood content per gram of tissue was measured in various regions of the myocardium of the dog, by use of I131-labeled albumin and Cr51O4-labeled red cells. The ratio of I131 to Cr51O4 distributions was uniform, indicating that plasma skimming does not increase O2 delivery to the inner layers. Gradients in blood content were observed from epicardium to

Estimation of the number of alveolar capillaries by the Euler number (Euler-Poincaré characteristic)

American Journal of Physiology-Lung Cellular and Molecular Physiology, 2015
The lung parenchyma provides a maximal surface area of blood-containing capillaries that are in close contact with a large surface area of the air-containing alveoli. Volume and surface area of capillaries are the classic stereological parameters to characterize the alveolar capillary network (ACN) and have provided essential structure-function ...

Optimum capillary number for oxygen delivery to tissue in man

Bulletin of Mathematical Biology, 1987
The optimum number of total capillaries in the whole human body was estimated from the analysis of the efficiency for oxygen (O2) transport in the vascular-tissue system. We used a tissue model composed of uniform spheres in which O2 diffuses from the capillary located at the centre of each sphere towards the surrounding tissue consuming O2 at a ...

Myocardial capillaries: Increase in number by splitting of existing vessels

Anatomy and Embryology, 1991
To study myocardial vascular development, stereological parameters were estimated in 24 Wistar rat hearts of six different age groups, from newborn to adult. The vascular surface density showed a sharp increase in the first 2 weeks, a peak around the age of 2 weeks, and then a steady decrease until it flattened in adulthood.

Mobilization of Remaining Oil - Emphasis on Capillary Number and Wettability

International Oil Conference and Exhibition in Mexico, 2007
Abstract The ratio between the viscous and capillary forces, commonly denoted the Capillary Number Nc, is crucial in determining the remaining oil saturation. The impact on residual oil saturation by a systematic increase in Nc is determined in homogeneous chalk at wettabilities varying from nearly neutral-wet to ...

Low capillary number withdrawal

Chemical Engineering Science, 1970
Abstract A simplification of the theory of Landau and Levich predicting the thickness in withdrawal with dominating capillary forces enables us to obtain a better understanding of the process. The applicability of the theory is limited to lower speeds than has been thought previously.

Droplet Traffic at a Simple Junction at Low Capillary Numbers

Physical Review Letters, 2005
We report that, when a train of confined droplets flowing through a channel reaches a junction, the droplets either are alternately distributed between the different outlets or all collect into the shortest one. We argue that this behavior is due to the hydrodynamic feedback of droplets in the different outlets on the selection process occurring at the

Use of plate numbers achieved in capillary electrophoretic protein separations for characterization of capillary coatings

Journal of Chromatography A, 1995
Abstract The number of theoretical plates achievable in capillary electrophoresis has been proposed for the characterization of the quality of capillary coatings. It is shown that, as predicted by theory, the efficiency is independent of capillary inner diameter and increases with increasing field strength as long as dispersive effects can be ...

The effect of micro-heterogeneity and capillary number on capillary pressure and relative permeability curves of soils

Geoderma, 2008
Abstract The determination of the two-phase flow coefficients (such as the capillary pressure, Pc, and relative permeabilities, krw, kro) is of a key importance to model the two-phase flow processes taking place during contaminant transport in subsurface. In the present work, transient immiscible displacement experiments are performed at various flow

Capillary Number Correlations for Gas-Liquid Systems

Canadian International Petroleum Conference, 2004
Abstract Conventional Capillary Number theory predicts that residual oil will not be mobilized until a critical capillary number (2E-05) is exceeded. This theory was tested to determine residual oil saturation mobilization after the forced water imbibition. In the literature, high residual oil saturation was firstly
