Atmospheric flash injuries in roe deer (Capreolus capreolus)

The pathological and histopathological examination of two female roe deer found dead after a severe thunderstorm is described. One of the two roe deer was killed by a direct hit of atmospheric flash, while the other animal, lying 1.5 m from the first one, died as a consequence of ground current strike.

We used 65 tissue samples from culled animals from three populations (Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen, National Park Zuid-Kennemerland and Flevopolder). The first two are dune populations and are about 3.5 kilometers apart.

Supernumerary digits on roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) have been recorded over many decades in Germany. The case described in this communication is believed to be only the second documented example from the UK. A right hind foot of a buck had three equally developed digits arising from a metatarsal that trifurcated.

The European roe deer occurs in most of the Netherlands. It is only absent from large polders in Noord-Holland, Zuid-Holland and Utrecht and from some of the Wadden Sea islands. Roe deer are found in a wide range of landscape types, but population density is highest in parkland. They prefer to forage in forest clearings and along forest edges.

A satellite DNA element specific for roe deer ( Capreolus capreolus )

An abundant tandem repetitive DNA segment (CCsatIII) with a repeat unit of 2.2 kb has been found in the genome of roe deer (Capreolus capreolus). It accounts for approximately 5%-10% of the genome and is only present in the two species of the genus Capreolus.
