An 84 cm adult crevalle jack, Caranx hippos, was caught on hook and line off Murrill's Inlet, South Carolina, with enlarged bulbous mandibles. Staining and sectioning revealed bony tissue throughout these bulges and ruled out parasitic copepods as possible causal agents of the bulges. The fish was normal in all respects.

Sounds Produced by Very Young Crevalle Jack, Caranx hippos, from the Maryland Seaside
Chesapeake Science, 1960Three very young crevalle jack, ranging from 38 to 41 mm total length, emitted a burst of rapid, short, rasping croaks upon being landed in a beach seine out of the ocean surf. Dissection revealed well-developed upper and lower pharyngeal teeth indicating that sounds were produced as in the adults.
