Biogeography and evolution of the Carassius auratus-complex in East Asia

open access: yesBMC Evolutionary Biology, 2010
Background Carassius auratus is a primary freshwater fish with bisexual diploid and unisexual gynogenetic triploid lineages. It is distributed widely in Eurasia and is especially common in East Asia.

Historical case study of a transfer experiment that demonstrated the importance of the estuarine ecosystem for the survival of Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) at the Campbell River estuary, British Columbia, Canada

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Estuary dependence to the survival of Chinook salmon was investigated at the Campbell River estuary, British Columbia, Canada. Replicate batches of marked smolts were transferred from a hatchery and released in 1983, 1984 and 1985 at four ecosystems, two that ensured estuarine experience (river, estuary) and two seawards of the estuary ...

A Review of Nonsteroidal Anti‐Inflammatory Drugs for Food‐Producing Animals With a Focus on Potential Applications for Farmed Finfish

open access: yesJournal of Fish Diseases, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT In finfish aquaculture, there are several inflammatory diseases impacting productivity and animal welfare, however there are limited options available to veterinarians to treat inflammation and pain in fish. Nonsteroidal anti‐inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are widely used in terrestrial animals raised for human consumption to treat a range of ...

Identification of Triploid Individuals and Clonal Lines in Carassius Auratus Complex Using Microsatellites

open access: yesInternational Journal of Biological Sciences, 2011
The Carassius auratus complex in natural populations includes diploid triploid and polyploidy individuals. Diploid individuals belong to the species Carassius auratus whereas triploid and polyploidy individuals are from the subspecies Carassius auratus ...

THE DIGESTIVE TRACT OF CARASSIUS AURATUS

open access: yesThe Biological Bulletin, 1940
1. The digestive tube of Carassius auratus closely resembles that of Campostoma anonsalum (Rafinesque).2. Study of the gross structure brought out the following characteristics: the posterior pharynx possesses pharyngeal teeth which bite on a dorsal horny pad; a dorsal diverticulum leading to the pneumatic duct extends from the short oesophagus; the ...

Evaluating Anesthetics for Improving Scientific Research and Welfare Using Larval Zebrafish

open access: yesComprehensive Physiology, Volume 16, Issue 3, June 2026.
Using physiological and behavioral assays, we quantified the effectiveness and appropriateness of six commonly used fish anesthetics on zebrafish embryos. Different anesthetics performed better under different contexts. Figure prepared using BioRender.com.

Biochemical responses of freshwater fish Carassius auratus to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and pesticides

open access: yesWater Science and Engineering, 2012
The freshwater fish Carassius auratus was chosen as an experimental subject, and their hepatic biochemical responses to the medium-term exposure of Benzo(k)fluoranthene (BkF) alone and in combination with PCB118 and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT ...

Formation of autotriploid Carassius auratus and its fertility-related genes analysis

open access: yesBMC Genomics, 2021
Background Formation of triploid organism is useful in genetics and breeding. In this study, autotriploid Carassius auratus (3nRR, 3n = 150) was generated from Carassius auratus red var. (RCC, 2n = 100) (♀) and autotetraploid Carassius auratus (4nRR, 4n =

Evaluating the Air Respiratory Capacity of Awaous (Chonophorus) tajasica (Gobiiformes: Oxudercidae): A Morpho‐Functional Study

open access: yesJournal of Experimental Zoology Part A: Ecological and Integrative Physiology, Volume 345, Issue 5, Page 498-507, June 2026.
We demonstrated that Awaous tajasica performs facultative air breathing under experimental conditions of dissolved oxygen limitation, retaining air bubbles in the buccal cavity during gill ventilation. Morpho‐functional evidence indicates the use of atmospheric oxygen as a respiratory support under conditions of low water oxygenation.
