Peatlands and the carbon cycle: from local processes to global implications – a synthesis

open access: yes, 2008
Peatlands cover only 3% of the Earth's land surface but boreal and subarctic peatlands store about 15–30% of the world's soil carbon (C) as peat.

Tailored Hierarchical Porous Copper Architectures via Three Dimensional Printing and Pressure‐less Sintering for Next‐Generation Lithium‐Metal Batteries

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A hierarchical porous copper current collector is fabricated via three‐dimensional printing combined with pressureless sintering to stabilize lithium metal anodes. The interconnected architecture lowers local current density, guides uniform Li deposition within pores, and suppresses dendrite growth.

Plio-Pleistocene simulations from a global carbon cycle box model

open access: yes, 2022
Atmospheric CO2 reconstructions beyond ice core records are based on geochemical proxies, which bear proxy-specific intrinsic uncertainties. Here, we use the global carbon cycle box model BICYCLE-SE and explore possible changes in the carbon cycle during

Intrinsic dimensionality as a metric for temporal plant diversity evaluation: Case study from the SHIFT campaign

open access: yesEcosphere
Current biodiversity metrics derived from remote sensing data are typically applied to small local areas, require significant training data, and are not easily extensible globally. Here we propose the mathematical concept of intrinsic dimensionality (ID)

Creating Ti–Fe α/β Alloys by Diffusion‐Driven Solid‐State Processing

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study proposes making alloys containing fast diffusing elements that are difficult to produce by ingot metallurgy, by diffusion‐driven solid‐state HIP processing of elemental powders and low‐temperature homogenisation. Here, novel Fe‐Ti α–β alloys are formed having fine α–β lamellae, a small β prior grain size without significant intermetallics ...

On the role of the Southern Ocean in the global carbon cycle and atmospheric CO2 change

open access: yes, 2010
Uncertainty about the causes of glacial-interglacial CO2 variations demonstrates our incomplete grasp of fundamental processes that govern our climate and thus one of the foremost problems in palaeoceanography and Earth System Science regards the ...

Above-ground biomass of Moso bamboo forests in China influenced by climate, soil and topography: A meta-analysis

open access: yesAdvances in Bamboo Science
Moso bamboo is an essential forest resource in China, covering the largest area and stock of any bamboo species. Four provinces (Fujian, Hunan, Zhejiang, Jiangxi) each have more than 70 million hectares, collectively accounting for 80 % of the total area

Additive Manufacturing of Continuous Fibre Reinforced Composites: Process, Characterisation, Modelling, and Sustainability

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Additive manufacturing provides precise control over the placement of continuous fibres within polymer matrices, enabling customised mechanical performance in composite components. This article explores processing strategies, mechanical testing, and modelling approaches for additive manufactured continuous fibre‐reinforced composites.

Understanding the Stochastic Nature of Process Parameter Development of Blown Powder Laser Beam Directed Energy Deposition Additive Manufacturing of Pure Molybdenum

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Identified through the use of statistical design of experiments and metallographic investigation, this study exposes the stochastic origins of intergranular cracks in blown powder laser beam directed energy deposition additive manufacturing of pure molybdenum. It further demonstrates a successful crack mitigation approach with direct correlation to the

Partitioning of One-Carbon Units in Folate and Methionine Metabolism Is Essential for Neural Tube Closure

open access: yesCell Reports, 2017
Summary: Abnormal folate one-carbon metabolism (FOCM) is implicated in neural tube defects (NTDs), severe malformations of the nervous system. MTHFR mediates unidirectional transfer of methyl groups from the folate cycle to the methionine cycle and ...
