Is Helium Insufflation Superior to Carbon Dioxide Insufflation in Bacteremia and Bacterial Translocation with Peritonitis?

Journal of Laparoendoscopic & Advanced Surgical Techniques, 2001
To evaluate the effects of CO2 or helium insufflation on bacteremia and bacterial translocation in rats with peritonitis.Forty male Wistar-Albino rats were divided into four groups, each containing 10 rats. The rats in the first group were injected only with E. coli into their peritoneal cavities with no further manipulation.

Simplified Apparatus for Insufflation of the Tubes with Carbon Dioxide

American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, 1946
Summary A simple apparatus for the insufflation of the Fallopian tubes is described. Carbon dioxide for the test is generated, thus eliminating the need for tanks or other source for the gas.

Hemodynamic effects of carbon dioxide insufflation during thoracoscopy

The Annals of Thoracic Surgery, 1994
As more complex thoracoscopic procedures are performed, adequate exposure becomes increasingly more important. The insufflation of CO2 has been demonstrated to aid in the compression of lung parenchyma and the effacement of subpleural lesions, and to act as a retractor when combined with changes in patient position. However, a recent study demonstrated

Effect of subcutaneous carbon dioxide insufflation on arterial pCO2

The American Journal of Surgery, 1996
Subcutaneous emphysema following laparoscopy could result in postoperative respiratory acidosis from prolonged CO2 absorption. We studied the magnitude and duration of alterations in PaCO2 coincident with direct CO2 insufflation into the subcutaneous fat of the anterior abdominal wall of 5 anesthetized juvenile pigs.First, each pig was insufflated with

Carbon dioxide-insufflated colonoscopy: an ignored superior technique

Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, 1986
Colonoscopy and barium enema are complementary studies in the diagnosis of the cause of lower intestinal bleeding. The air usually insufflated during colonoscopy often makes it impossible to perform a good barium enema on the same day. As a possible solution to this problem, we studied the quality of barium enemas performed immediately following carbon

Carbon Dioxide Absorption Is Not Linearly Related to Intraperitoneal Carbon Dioxide Insufflation Pressure in Pigs

Anesthesiology, 1994
Carbon dioxide absorption into the blood during laparoscopic surgery using intraperitoneal carbon dioxide insufflation may lead to respiratory acidosis, increased ventilation requirements, and possible serious cardiovascular compromise. The relationship between increased carbon dioxide excretion (VCO2) and intraperitoneal carbon dioxide insufflation ...

Intraperitoneal Carbon Dioxide Insufflation and Cardiopulmonary Functions

Archives of Surgery, 1992
We studied the effects of laparoscopic cholecystectomy on respiratory and hemodynamic function in eight adult pigs. Minute ventilation was adjusted to normalize baseline arterial blood gases, then fixed throughout carbon dioxide insufflation. A metabolic measurement cart recorded total CO2 excretion, oxygen consumption, and minute ventilation.

Peritoneal Host Defenses: Modulation by Carbon Dioxide Insufflation

Surgical Infections, 2001
The host response to inflammatory stimuli in the peritoneal cavity consists of coordinated interactions of physical factors, cells, and soluble mediator molecules. Following infection, this is characterized by rapid eradication of large numbers of bacteria via the diaphragmatic lymphatics, clearance of bacteria through phagocytosis and intracellular ...

A Suprarenal Tumour Demonstrated by Presacral Insufflation of Carbon Dioxide

The British Journal of Radiology, 1953
A case of adenocarcinoma of the right suprarenal gland, and its radiological demonstration by presacral insufflation of CO2 is described.
