Alignment of edge dislocations – the reason lying behind composition inhomogeneity induced low thermal conductivity

open access: yesNature Communications
Compositional inhomogeneity in a material can result in low thermal conductivity, benefiting applications such as thermoelectric energy conversion, energy gas storage, and thermal barrier coating.

Impact of Sustainable Binders Based on Lignin and Collagen on the Volume Stability and Mechanical Properties of MgO‐C Refractories with MgO‐C Recyclates

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Collagen hydrolysate is evaluated as a sustainable binder for MgO‐C refractories. Its thermally induced cross‐linking and gas release lead to expansion and cracking in large bricks, but tailored batches with lignin, recyclates, or fine graphite improve the gas release while thermal treatment and stability.

Interactions of tree size, competition, and tree species drive carbon accumulation in subtropical mixed forests: A case study of the coniferous-broadleaved mixed forest in Tianmu Mountain

open access: yesEcological Indicators
Enhancing forests’ carbon storage is crucial in combating climate change. Factors like tree size, species, and competition affect carbon sequestration, but their interactive dynamics and impacts on carbon accumulation are not fully understood.

Estimating the Economic Value of Temporary and Permanent Carbon Sequestration Activities on Agricultural Land [PDF]

open access: yes
This paper estimates the value of carbon from soil sequestration and emission reductions from setting aside highly erodible land. Increases in soil carbon are estimated using the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change soil organic carbon inventory ...

A Tale of Three Galaxies: Anomalous Dust Properties in IRASF10398+1455, IRASF21013-0739 and SDSSJ0808+3948

open access: yes, 2014
On a galactic scale the 9.7um silicate emission is usually only seen in type 1 active galactic nuclei (AGNs). They usually also display a flat emission continuum at ~5--8um and the absence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission bands.

Dielectric Barrier Discharge Plasma Deoxidation of Natively Oxide Layer of Copper Powders in a Fluidized Bed

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This paper presents a novel approach to reducing oxide layers on metal powders using low‐temperature hydrogen dielectric barrier discharge plasmas at atmospheric pressure. Unlike conventional hydrogen‐plasma reductions, the powders do not contact the plasma directly.

Denoising of Partial Discharge Signal in Stator Using Wavelet Transform with Improved Thresholding Function

open access: yesApplied Sciences
Partial discharge (PD) signals are used to evaluate the insulation condition of stators in electrical machines. Their measurements are often heavily corrupted by ambient noise, making denoising essential for effective detection and analysis of PD signals.
