Converting PBO fibers into carbon fibers by ultrafast carbonization

open access: yesCarbon, 2020
Abstract We report an ultrafast transformation of poly(p-phenylene-2,6-benzobisoxazole) (PBO) fibers into carbon fibers (CFs) by direct carbonization that eliminates high-cost oxidation in traditional CF conversion. Ultrafast heating and cooling render PBO-derived CFs superlative mechanical properties.

Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymers [PDF]

open access: yesMaterials, 2021
The current demand for lightweight and high-performance structures leads to increasing applications of carbon fiber reinforced polymers, which is also made possible by novel production methods, automation with repeatable quality, the reduced cost of carbon fibers, out of autoclave processes such as resin transfer molding and resin infusion technologies,

Electrical conductivity improvement of aeronautical carbon fiber reinforced polyepoxy composites by insertion of carbon nanotubes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
An increase and homogenization of electrical conductivity is essential in epoxy carbon fiber laminar aeronautical composites. Dynamic conductivity measurements have shown a very poor transversal conductivity.

Epoxy insulated carbon fiber and carbon nanotube fiber microelectrodes

open access: yesSensors and Actuators B: Chemical, 2013
Carbon-fiber microelectrodes (CFMEs) are typically constructed from glass capillaries pulled to a fine taper or from a polyimide-coated capillary that is 90 μm in outer diameter. Here, a new fabrication method is developed to insulate carbon-fiber microelectrodes with a thin epoxy coating.

Preparation of Carbon Fiber/Carbon Composites Using Intercalated Carbon Fibers

open access: yesTANSO, 1992
Carbon fiber/carbon composites were prepared from carbon fibers intercalated with AlCl3 as reinforcements, and coal tar pitch or phenol resin as matrix precursor. A1C13, which is known to have a catalytic effect on the carbonization process, was de-intercalated from carbon fibers during the preparation of composites, i.e.

Carbon Fiber Biocompatibility for Implants [PDF]

open access: yesFibers, 2016
Carbon fibers have multiple potential advantages in developing high-strength biomaterials with a density close to bone for better stress transfer and electrical properties that enhance tissue formation. As a breakthrough example in biomaterials, a 1.5 mm diameter bisphenol-epoxy/carbon-fiber-reinforced composite rod was compared for two weeks in a rat ...
