The diamagnetic susceptibilities of a polyacrylonitryle-based carbon fiber (PAN-CF) and benzene derived carbon fiber (BDF) stepwise heat-treated up to 3000°C were measured between liquid-nitrogen and room temperatures. Total susceptibility (χT) vs reciprocal temperature (1/T) plots for PAN-CF specimens heat-treated beyond 1300°C are entirely in ...

Carbon fiber reinforced polymer matrix composites can be said to have had their beginning in the 1950s and to have attained the status of a mature structural material in the 1980s. Not unexpectedly, applications in the defense-related aerospace industry were the main driving force for the carbon fiber reinforced polymer matrix composites, followed by ...

Fabrication of carbon fibers from jute fibers by pre-oxidation and carbonization
New Carbon Materials, 2013Low-cost jute-based carbon fibers were fabricated by pre-oxidation and carbonization. The chemical, morphological and crystal structure of the jute fibers during pre-oxidation were investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, elemental analysis, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy.

The most fundamental aspect of carbon/carbon technology is the substructure or preform which from design considerations may be referred to as fiber architecture. Fiber architecture is the backbone of composites. It not only imparts rigidity to the composites, but also in combination with fiber properties it determines the properties of the composites ...

Lignin-based carbon fiber: a current overview
Materials Research Express, 2018Research involving lignin use is not new. For many years, the macromolecule was underestimated in its potential and burned for energy use in pulp and paper industries.

Carbon Fiber/Carbon Matrix Composites
2012We devote this chapter to a very special kind of composite that consists of carbon fibers embedded in a carbonaceous matrix. The carbon fiber in these composites can be continuous or short. We described the processing of carbon fibers in Chap. 2. Carbon is a very versatile material.
