Structure and growth process of vapor-grown carbon fibers [PDF]

open access: yes
The structure, effect of heat, and growth process of vapor-grown carbon fibers are investigated. The growth process of the carbon fibers could be divided into three stages; nucleation, elongation, and thickening processes. Also, a multi-layered structure

The effect of longitudinal debonding on stress redistributions around fiber breaks: Incorporating fiber diameter distribution and fiber misalignment [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv
This research explores the influence of interfacial debonding between a broken fiber and matrix on stress redistribution surrounding a fiber break within a unidirectional (UD) impregnated fiber bundle, accounting for misalignment of fibers and fiber diameter distribution in randomly packed fiber configurations.

Atomistic scale analysis of the carbonization process for C/H/O/N-based polymers with the ReaxFF reactive force field [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2019
During the carbonization process of raw polymer precursors, graphitic structures can evolve. The presence of these graphitic structures affects mechanical properties of the carbonized carbon fibers. To gain a better understanding of the chemistry behind the evolution of these structures, we performed atomistic scale simulations using the ReaxFF ...

Print‐and‐Plate Architected Electrodes for Electrochemical Transformations Under Flow

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Typical flow cell electrodes are composed of stochastic porous carbon, limiting understanding of electrode structure‐performance relationships. This work describes an approach, termed “print‐and‐plate,” to prepare porous electrodes by direct ink writing followed by conformal metal coating.

Small-angle x-ray scattering analysis of carbon fiber voids considering void length distribution

open access: yesCarbon Trends
The analysis method proposed by Ruland et al. is widely used to analyze the void lengths in carbon fibers, but it could not apply to mesophase pitch-based carbon fibers.

Non-Destructive Acoustic Test (NDAT) to Determine Elastic Modulus of Polymeric Composites [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2017
In this paper, three different fiber polyester composites (glass fiber, carbon fiber and hemp fiber) were separately prepared via pultrusion method. Then, a Non Destructive Acoustic Test (NDAT) based on longitudinal free vibration was utilized to measure viscoelastic properties of resultant composites.

Unlocking High‐Performance in All‐Organic Solar Cells by the Development of Organic Electrodes with No Acid and High‐Temperature Treatment and the Effective Preparation Thereof on Organic Multilayer Films

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The developed all‐organic solar cells achieve a power conversion efficiency of 8.7%, more than double the previous record. In addition, bioplastic substrates are used to produce environmentally friendly solar cells with an efficiency of 8.6%. These results are achieved by developing high‐performance organic electrodes without acid doping or high ...

Biologically‐Inspired Melt Electrowriting for the Generation of Highly Biomimetic Functional Myocardium

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
In this work, melt electrowriting is used to fabricate a 3D printed scaffold design that generates engineered cardiac tissues with in‐plane contraction, mimicking natural myocardium. It is shown that these tissues display advanced maturation and functionality.
