Abstract Liquid state dispersion curves of SiHCl 3 and GeHCl 3 from 5000 to 450 cm −1 have been obtained, and band intensities of the ν 1 , ν 4 and ν 5 vibrations derived. These values are compared with literature data for CHCl 3 , and the trends discussed in relation to the electronegativities of the elements.
