Functional comparison of EncB and EncC cargo proteins in iron storage within the Myxococcus xanthus encapsulin

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Encapsulins are protein nanocompartments that play an important role in iron storage. In the Myxococcus xanthus encapsulin system, two cargo proteins called EncB and EncC contribute to iron mineralization. Here, we show that EncB and EncC generate iron‐containing minerals with distinct chemical compositions, suggesting that the composition of stored ...

Multi-Scale Estimation of Urban Carbon Emissions Using Nighttime Light Data: A Case Study of Nanjing, China

open access: yesApplied Sciences
Rapid urbanization and associated greenhouse gas emissions pose severe challenges to global climate goals. Accurately estimating urban carbon emissions at fine administrative scales is a critical prerequisite for spatially differentiated mitigation ...

Interactive effects of land-use intensity, grazing and fire on decomposition of subtropical seasonal wetlands

open access: yesEcological Indicators, 2021
Understanding how global change drivers and their interactions affect decomposition in wetlands embedded in agricultural landscapes remains challenging, especially in tropical and subtropical biomes, which are disproportionately important for global ...

Structures of mycobacterial 3‐methylcrotonyl‐CoA carboxylase reveal carrier‐domain translocation between catalytic sites

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Mycobacterial 3‐methylcrotonyl‐CoA carboxylase uses a mobile biotin‐carrying domain to shuttle a carboxyl group between two catalytic sites, enabling carboxylation of 3‐methylcrotonyl‐CoA during leucine breakdown. Cryo‐electron microscopy captures the carrier at both sites and reveals an inward loop movement that may prevent futile rebinding to the ...

Renewable energy, energy intensity and carbon reduction: Experience of large emerging economies

open access: yes, 2022
High level of carbon emissions is still a policy agenda because of its detrimental effect on environment. CO2 emissions are growing quickly in emerging countries with the high energy consumption, industrial activities, and rapid globalization.

L‐aspartate oxidase provides new insights into fumarate reduction in anaerobic darkness in Synechocystis sp. PCC6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Synechocystis strains deficient in succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) secrete more succinate than the WT under dark anaerobic conditions, supporting that SDH then primarily acts as SDH, not as a fumarate reductase. L‐aspartate oxidase (Laspo) from Synechocystis is functional under anaerobic conditions, reducing fumarate to succinate.

Tree Species Composition and Diversity in Fire-Affected Areas of Miombo Woodlands, Central Mozambique

open access: yesFire, 2023
Fire strongly impacts the composition and structure of ecosystems, with consequences yet to be understood. We used Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data to map fire frequency and fire intensity and investigate their effects on miombo

Artificial molecular machines and motors—Design and control of nanoscale motion

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Molecules are constantly moving because of thermal fluctuations, but random motion alone cannot be exploited to perform directional tasks. Artificial molecular machines use chemical, electrical, or light energy to bias this motion. Molecular shuttles, rotary motors, and supramolecular pumps illustrate how nanoscale movement can be controlled and ...

Spatio-temporal impact of R&D innovation on carbon emission intensity: A comparative analysis of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei and Pearl River Delta urban agglomerations

open access: yesWorld Development Sustainability
China places significant emphasis on reducing carbon emission intensity, with research and development (R&D) innovation serving as an effective approach, particularly among industrial businesses in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) and the Beijing-Tianjin ...
