Associations between stand spatial structures and carbon sequestration on natural Larix gmelinii forests in Northeast China

open access: yesTrees, Forests and People
Forest structure is a fundamental component of the forest ecosystem and significantly impacts carbon sequestration. Previous studies mainly focused on optimizing forest non-spatial attributes for restoring carbon, but the significance of stand spatial ...

Powering Nanocrystal‐Based Heat Engines With Light‐Emitting Metasurfaces That Influence Their Temperature

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Metasurfaces and other structured photonic environments can dramatically modify the absorption and/or light emission of semiconductors. However, the consequences of these changes on the temperature of the system are not well understood. The authors address this problem for colloidal nanocrystals and leverage their findings to convert light into ...

Vorticity‐Driven µ‐Platelet Rotation and Selective Packing for Vertical Thermal–Electrical Interconnects

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
We introduce a capillary‐filtering‐based particle‐filling (CFPF) process that simultaneously forms vertical thermal pathways and electrical vias within µ‐pores. In situ microfluidic analysis reveals that capillary‐driven velocity gradients generate vorticity that governs µ‐platelet rotation and vertical alignment.

THE SOCIAL COST OF CARBON: TRENDS, OUTLIERS AND CATASTROPHES [PDF]

open access: yes
211 estimates of the social cost of carbon are included in a meta-analysis. The results confirm that a lower discount rate implies a higher estimate; and that higher estimates are found in the gray literature.

Short-term effects of irrigation and nitrogen management on paddy soil carbon pools under deep placement of basal fertilizer nitrogen

open access: yesScientific Reports
Active soil organic carbon (SOC) fractions are major driving factors of soil fertility. Understanding the effects of water and fertilizer management on changes in active SOC fractions helps improve soil quality and maintain high agricultural productivity.

Application of Ibuprofen Sodium Dihydrate for Thermochemical Energy Storage

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Ibuprofen sodium dihydrate is introduced as a durable organic salt hydrate for low‐temperature thermochemical energy storage, operating within 60°C–110°C with high energy density. At the material level, it delivers ∼99.9% cycling efficiency over 150 cycles without deliquescence, enabled by a dual energy‐storage mechanism coupling dehydration and phase ...

Conformal Metallosaccharide Hybrid Films for Protecting Wood Surfaces From Environmental Damage

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Ti‐ribose hybrid films fabricated by molecular layer deposition form a conformal and uniform coating on wood surfaces, which provides water repellence, dimensional stability, and resistance to acidic and alkaline environments, while preserving the natural appearance.

Hierarchical MXene‐Derived NTP/C Nanohybrids for Cryogenic Sodium‐Ion Batteries

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A hierarchical MXene‐derived NaTi2(PO4)3/C nanohybrid enables efficient sodium‐ion storage down to −40°C by integrating fast ion–electron transport pathways with an ether‐based electrolyte. The system promotes dominant pseudocapacitive behavior and forms a robust inorganic‐rich SEI, collectively mitigating kinetic and interfacial limitations, thereby ...
