Heterotrophic Carbon Metabolism

2005
Publisher Summary The chapter focuses on the heterotrophic processes of carbon mineralization. The relationship between microbial activity and carbon source are considered and the role of microorganisms in the detritus food chain is studied. The chapter outlines the various pathways of both aerobic and anaerobic organic carbon mineralization.

Unfamiliar metabolic links in the central carbon metabolism

Journal of Biotechnology, 2014
The central carbon metabolism of all organisms is considered to follow a well established fixed scheme. However, recent studies of autotrophic carbon fixation in prokaryotes revealed unfamiliar metabolic links. A new route interconnects acetyl-coenzyme A (CoA) via 3-hydroxypropionate with succinyl-CoA.

CARBON AND CARBONATE METABOLISM IN COASTAL AQUATIC ECOSYSTEMS

Annual Review of Ecology and Systematics, 1998
▪ Abstract  The coastal zone is where land, ocean, and atmosphere interact. It exhibits a wide diversity of geomorphological types and ecosystems, each one displaying great variability in terms of physical and biogeochemical forcings. Despite its relatively modest surface area, the coastal zone plays a considerable role in the biogeochemical cycles ...

Modes of cyanobacterial carbon metabolism

One-Carbon Metabolism and Lipid Metabolism in DOHaD

2018
The predisposing factors to lifestyle-associated diseases are established in the early period of life with underlying gene-environment interaction. Epigenetics is a chemical modification-based genetic mechanism that is affected by various nutritional factors.

Schizophrenia and single-carbon metabolism

Progress in Neuro-Psychopharmacology and Biological Psychiatry, 2005
Schizophrenic patients generally appear to have a disturbed single-carbon metabolism. Methionine and homocysteine are intermediary metabolites in this metabolic system. In a case-control study of the cerebrospinal fluid, a majority of the patients had elevated methionine and a smaller subgroup had elevated homocysteine.

Photosynthesis. Carbon Metabolism: The Carbon Metabolisms of Unstressed and Stressed Plants

1997
Following on from the pioneer experiments of investigators such as Joseph Priestly and Jan Ingenhousz, Nicolas de Saussure must have felt close to a full explanation of the growth of plants when he concluded that plant dry matter originated predominantly from water and air.
