A mechanism study of acid-assisted oxidative stabilization of asphaltene-derived carbon fibers [PDF]

open access: yesCarbon Trends, 2021
The development of inexpensive carbon fiber precursors is necessary to meet the future demands of carbon fibers. This work shows how asphaltenes, which are obtained as a by-product in bitumen production, can play an important role as such inexpensive ...

Carbon storage and DNA absorption in allophanic soils and paleosols [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Andisols and andic paleosols dominated by the nanocrystalline mineral allophane sequester large amounts of carbon (C), attributable mainly to its chemical bonding with charged hydroxyl groups on the surface of allophane together with its physical ...

Stabilizing carbon-lithium stars

open access: yesPhysical Chemistry Chemical Physics, 2011
We have explored in silico the potential energy surfaces of the C(5)Li(n)(n-6) (n = 5, 6, and 7) clusters using the Gradient Embedded Genetic Algorithm (GEGA) and other computational strategies. The most stable forms of C(5)Li(5)(-) and C(5)Li(6) are two carbon chains linked by two lithium atoms in a persistent seven membered ring capped by two Li ...

Protein stability at a carbon nanotube interface [PDF]

open access: yesThe Journal of Chemical Physics, 2011
The interactions of proteins with solid surfaces occur in a variety of situations. Motivated by the many nanoengineering applications of protein-carbon nanotube hybrids, we investigate the conformational transitions of hen egg white lysozyme adsorbed on a carbon nanotube. Using a Cα structure-based model and replica exchange molecular dynamics, we show

Characterization of polyacrylonitrile thermal stabilization process for carbon fiber production using intelligent algorithms

open access: yesPolymer Testing, 2021
Composite materials have widened their application range in recent years. The polymeric composite reinforced with carbon fibers can be described as a high-performance structural material which merges two important features: low weight and mechanical ...

Stabilization and Carbonization of PAN Nanofiber Mats Electrospun on Metal Substrates

open access: yesC, 2021
Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofiber mats are typical precursors for carbon nanofibers. They can be fixed or even elongated during stabilization and subsequent carbonization to gain straight, mechanically robust carbon nanofibers.

Stability of peatland carbon to rising temperatures [PDF]

open access: yesNature Communications, 2016
AbstractPeatlands contain one-third of soil carbon (C), mostly buried in deep, saturated anoxic zones (catotelm). The response of catotelm C to climate forcing is uncertain, because prior experiments have focused on surface warming. We show that deep peat heating of a 2 m-thick peat column results in an exponential increase in CH4 emissions.

Stability of dense liquid carbon dioxide [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 2012
We present ab initio calculations of the phase diagram of liquid CO 2 and its melting curve over a wide range of pressure and temperature conditions, including those relevant to the Earth. Several distinct liquid phases are predicted up to 200 GPa and 10,000 K based on their structural and ...
