Evidence of First Stars-enriched Gas in High-redshift Absorbers

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2023
The first stars were born from chemically pristine gas. They were likely massive, and thus they rapidly exploded as supernovae, enriching the surrounding gas with the first heavy elements.

Stabilizing carbon-lithium stars

open access: yesPhysical Chemistry Chemical Physics, 2011
We have explored in silico the potential energy surfaces of the C(5)Li(n)(n-6) (n = 5, 6, and 7) clusters using the Gradient Embedded Genetic Algorithm (GEGA) and other computational strategies. The most stable forms of C(5)Li(5)(-) and C(5)Li(6) are two carbon chains linked by two lithium atoms in a persistent seven membered ring capped by two Li ...

More dwarf carbon stars [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 1993
We have discovered three very faint carbon stars (m V >19) in the course of a multicolour survey for high-redshift quasars. Proper motion measurements have been made of these stars to determine their luminosity class. On this basis, the star 0045-259 is confirmed as a halo dwarf, joining the four dwarf carbon stars already known.

The Carbon Stars Adventure [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the International Astronomical Union, 2015
AbstractWe compare in a systematic way spectrometric, photometric and mid-infrared (VLTI/MIDI) interferometric measurements with different types of model atmospheres. Self-consistent dynamic model atmospheres in particular were used to interpret in a consistent way the dynamic behavior of gas and dust.

Interpretation of Carbon Stars [PDF]

open access: yesSymposium - International Astronomical Union, 1974
This communication aims at presenting the results of a research, whose purposes are to gain some insight into the evolutionary state of C stars, when the assumption is made that the main features of their spectra are due to mixing of the envelope with thermonuclear processed layers.

UIR Bands in Carbon Star Spectra [PDF]

open access: yesAstrophysics and Space Science, 1997
Unidentified infrared emission bands (UIR bands) have been attributed to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which are believed to require ultraviolet radiation in order for the UIR bands to be excited. If, in addition to amorphous carbon and hydrogenated amorphous carbon (HAC) particles, PAHs are able to form in the outflows of cool carbon-rich ...

The absolute magnitudes of carbon stars - Carbon stars in binary systems

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 1975
Absolute visual magnitudes have been determined for carbon stars belonging to binary systems. These range from about 0 to brighter than -4, with a mean value of -2.3 for N stars. Bolometric corrections are deduced, giving bolometric absolute magnitudes in the range -4 to -8.

CARBON STARS FROM LAMOST DR2 DATA [PDF]

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series, 2016
ABSTRACT In this work, we present the new catalog of carbon stars from the LAMOST DR2 catalog. In total, 894 carbon stars are identified from multiple line indices measured from the stellar spectra. We are able to identify the carbon stars by combining the CN bands in the red end with C2 and other lines.

Near-infrared photometry of carbon stars [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2006
Abstract Near-infrared, JHKL, photometry of 239 Galactic C-rich variable stars is presented and discussed. From these and published data, the stars were classified as Mira or non-Mira variables, and amplitudes and pulsation periods, ranging from 222 to 948 d for the Miras, were determined for most of them.

Carbon star survey in the Local Group. VII. NGC 3109 a galaxy without a stellar halo

open access: yes, 2003
We present a CFH12K wide field survey of the carbon star population in and around NGC 3109. Carbon stars, the brightest members of the intermediate-age population, were found nearly exclusively in and near the disk of NGC 3109, ruling out the existence ...
