Internal and External Alignment of Carbonaceous Grains within the Radiative Torque Paradigm [PDF]

open access: goldAstrophysical Journal, 2023
We study the internal and external alignment of carbonaceous grains in the interstellar medium (ISM) within the Radiative Torque (RAT) paradigm.

Carbonaceous dust grains seen in the first billion years of cosmic time [PDF]

open access: greenNature, 2023
An (ultraviolet) dust attenuation feature at 2,175 Å, attributed to carbonaceous dust grains in the Milky Way and nearby galaxies, also exists in galaxies up to a redshift of 7. Large dust reservoirs (up to approximately 10^8  M _⊙) have been detected^ 1

Origin of isolated olivine grains in carbonaceous chondrites [PDF]

open access: greenMeteoritics & Planetary Science, 2020
We report microscopic, cathodoluminescence, chemical, and O isotopic measurements of FeO‐poor isolated olivine grains (IOG) in the carbonaceous chondrites Allende (CV3), Northwest Africa 5958 (C2‐ung), Northwest Africa 11086 (CM2‐an), and Allan Hills ...

Carbonaceous dust grains in luminous infrared galaxies [PDF]

open access: bronzeAstronomy and Astrophysics, 2007
[Conclusions] These observations further demonstrate the ubiquitousness of a-C:H in the diffuse interstellar medium (DISM) of galaxies, for a long time almost only observed in the Milky-Way ISM lines-of-sights. Whereas PAH emission lines trace the re-processing of energetic young stellar radiation, the observed a-C:H features underline the existence of

Laboratory Experiments on the Low-temperature Formation of Carbonaceous Grains in the ISM [PDF]

open access: bronzeAstrophysical Journal, Supplement Series, 2017
The life cycle of cosmic dust grains is far from being understood and the origin and evolution of interstellar medium (ISM) grains is still under debate.

Variations of organic functional chemistry in carbonaceous matter from the asteroid 162173 Ryugu [PDF]

open access: yesNature Communications
Primordial carbon delivered to the early earth by asteroids and meteorites provided a diverse source of extraterrestrial organics from pre-existing simple organic compounds, complex solar-irradiated macromolecules, and macromolecules from extended ...

Characterization of Presolar Silicate and Oxide Grains in Primitive Carbonaceous Chondrites [PDF]

open access: bronzeAstrophysical Journal, 2007
Raster ion imaging of the oxygen isotopes with the NanoSIMS ion microprobe has been used to identify presolar grains in two primitive meteorites. Eleven presolar silicates and eight presolar oxides were identified in the primitive carbonaceous chondrite Acfer 094 for abundances of 325 and 360 parts per million (ppm), respectively.

Presolar grains in primitive ungrouped carbonaceous chondrite Northwest Africa 5958 [PDF]

open access: greenMeteoritics & Planetary Science, 2019
We report a correlated NanoSIMS‐transmission electron microscopy study of the ungrouped carbonaceous chondrite Northwest Africa (NWA) 5958. We identified 10 presolar SiC grains, 2 likely presolar graphite grains, and 20 presolar silicate and/or oxide ...

Simulation of Infrared Spectra of Carbonaceous Grains [PDF]

open access: yesAstrophysical Journal, 1997
Random covalent network (RCN) theory is applied to describe the infrared spectroscopic properties of carbonaceous solids with compositions containing a mixture of aromatic, aliphatic, and diamond-like hydrocarbons. Application of this technique to carbonaceous dust is equivalent to the synthesis of solids whose structure and bonding satisfy ...

Low-temperature Formation of Carbonaceous Dust Grains from PAHs

open access: yesAstrophysical Journal, 2020
Carbon is ubiquitous in space and plays a key role in prebiotic chemistry. Astronomical observations have found interstellar carbon in the form of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) as well as carbonaceous dust, confirming its presence in both ...
