Initiation of stress corrosion cracking for pipeline steels in a carbonate-bicarbonate solution

open access: yesMetallurgical and Materials Transactions A, 1996
The linearly increasing stress test (LIST) was used to study the stress corrosion cracking (SCC) behavior of a range of pipeline steels in carbonate-bicarbonate solution under stress rate control at different applied potentials. Stress corrosion cracking, at potentials below -800 mV(SCE), was attributed to hydrogen embrittlement.

Adsorption of carbonate and bicarbonate salts at the air–brine interface

open access: yesInternational Journal of Mineral Processing, 2006
Previous research has shown that the flotation of soluble salt is determined by interfacial water structure, thermal stability, and viscosity. These salts include alkali halide and alkali oxyanion salts.

The passivation of iron in carbonate/bicarbonate solutions

Journal of Electroanalytical Chemistry and Interfacial Electrochemistry, 1974
Summary Steady state, sweep and a.c. impedance measurements have been made on the iron electrode in carbonate/bicarbonate buffer solutions. The results of such measurements, in conjunction with observations using the ring-disc electrode, are used to discuss the kinetics of dissolution and passivation, at room temperature.
