Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Soil food web models are essential for linking animal diversity to carbon and nutrient cycling. However, it is unclear how soil animals regulate excess carbon when nutrient availability limits their growth and how to best represent animal respiration in these models. To

Comprehensive framework for assessing and optimizing existing research networks
Abstract Conservation, monitoring, and research networks, or collections of ecological research sites unified under a common mission of data collection or a research mission, are essential infrastructure for understanding large landscapes. However, most networks developed opportunistically over decades rather than through systematic design, creating ...

Protected areas on international borders show uneven conservation outcomes
Abstract Border protected areas (BPAs) are national protected areas that are immediately adjacent to a country's border or span two or more countries; they are characterized by distinctive opportunities and pressures. They play a critical role in protecting carbon‐rich ecosystems, conserving endangered biodiversity, reducing cross‐border environmental ...

Dung beetles suppressed cumulative methane flux from cattle dung by 85% and reduced total greenhouse gas emissions by 18%. Beetle activity accelerated initial CO2 release but did not alter total cumulative flux. N2O and NH3 fluxes were transient and not consistently driven by beetle presence.
