Tree Diversity Increases Carbon Stocks and Fluxes Above—But Not Belowground in a Tropical Forest Experiment

open access: yesGlobal Change Biology, Volume 31, Issue 2, February 2025.
We examined the potential of mixed‐species planted forests compared to monospecific forests to act as a nature‐based solution to climate change mitigation through carbon sequestration. By analysing multiple carbon stocks and fluxes over 16 years in the world's oldest tropical tree diversity experiment, we found that planted forests with five tree ...

open access: yesThe Journal of Latin American and Caribbean Anthropology, Volume 29, Issue 4, Page 352-363, December 2024.
Abstract This paper explores selective aspects of the historical processes of organization of the kichwa peasantry in the Andes of Ecuador. Based on the analysis of two representative cases of confrontation between peasants and landowners over access to land in the province of Chimborazo, it discusses the relevance of the concept of “gamonalismo” as ...

Natural forest colonisation as a management strategy to restore soil functioning of abandoned agricultural lands

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 61, Issue 11, Page 2690-2700, November 2024.
Though its effectiveness is variable, passive restoration can be more effective than active restoration. Our research indicates that passive tree colonisation of past agricultural land is enough to achieve soil functionality similar to a mature forest for most variables studied. However, some variables would need more time to reach mature forest levels,

Soil carbon and nitrogen cycling at the atmosphere–soil interface: Quantifying the responses of biocrust–soil interactions to global change

open access: yesGlobal Change Biology, Volume 30, Issue 10, October 2024.
Despite the critical role of biological soil crusts (biocrusts) in dryland C and N cycles, little is known about how biocrust‐derived C and N move into the soil. This study reveals how biocrusts facilitate the downward movement of C and N and drive the formation of mineral‐associated organic matter in subcrust soils.

Vegetative stage and soil horizon respectively determine direction and magnitude of rhizosphere priming effects in contrasting tree line soils

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 38, Issue 9, Page 1984-2002, September 2024.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Tree lines in high latitudes and high altitudes are considered sentinels of global change. This manifests in accelerated encroachment of trees and shrubs and enhanced plant productivity, with currently unknown implications for the carbon balance of these biomes.
