Protease inhibitors targeting coronavirus and filovirus entry. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
In order to gain entry into cells, diverse viruses, including Ebola virus, SARS-coronavirus and the emerging MERS-coronavirus, depend on activation of their envelope glycoproteins by host cell proteases.

SIRT4 positively regulates autophagy via ULK1, but independently of HDAC6 and OPA1

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Cells expressing SIRT4 (H161Y), a catalytically inactive mutant of the sirtuin SIRT4, fail to upregulate LC3B‐II and exhibit a reduced autophagic flux under stress conditions. Interestingly, SIRT4(H161Y) promotes phosphorylation of ULK1 at S638 and S758 that are associated with inhibition of autophagy initiation.

Cymantrene–Triazole "Click" Products: Structural Characterization and Electrochemical Properties [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
We report the first known examples of triazole-derivatized cymantrene complexes (η5-[4-substituted triazol-1-yl]cyclopentadienyl)tricarbonylmanganese(I), obtained via a “click” chemical synthesis, bearing a phenyl, 3-aminophenyl, or 4-aminophenyl moiety ...

Metformin promotes mitochondrial integrity through AMPK‐signaling in Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Metformin mediates mitochondrial quality control in Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) fibroblasts carrying mtDNA mutations. At therapeutic levels, metformin activates AMPK signaling to restore mitochondrial dynamics by promoting fusion and restraining fission, while preserving mitochondrial mass, enhancing autophagy/mitophagy and biogenesis ...

Carbonyl compounds indoors in a changing climate

open access: yesChemistry Central Journal, 2012
Background Formic acid, acetic acid and formaldehyde are important compounds in the indoor environment because of the potential for these acids to degrade calcareous materials (shells, eggs, tiles and geological specimens), paper and corrode or tarnish ...

Reactivity of [Re\u3csub\u3e2\u3c/sub\u3e(CO)\u3csub\u3e8\u3c/sub\u3e(MeCN)\u3csub\u3e2\u3c/sub\u3e] with Thiazoles: Hydrido Bridged Dirhenium Compounds Bearing Thiazoles in Different Coordination Modes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Reactions of the labile compound [Re2(CO)8(MeCN)2] with thiazole and 4-methylthiazole in refluxing benzene afforded the new compounds [Re2(CO)7{μ-2,3-η2-C3H(R)NS}{η1-NC3H2(4-R)S}(μ-H)] (1, R = H; 2, R = CH3), [Re2(CO)6{μ-2,3-η2-C3H(R)NS}{η1-NC3H2(4-R)S}2(

Cleavage of Ge–S and C–H bonds in the reaction of electron-deficient [Os₃(CO)₈(μ-H)(μ₃-Ph₂PCH₂P(Ph)C₆H₄)] with Ph₃GeSPh: Generation of thiophenol derivatives [Os₃(CO)₈(μ-H)(μ-SPh)(μ-dppm)] and [Os₃(CO)₇(μ-H)(μ-SPh)(μ₃-SC₆H₄)(μ-dppm)] [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Heating the electron-deficient [Os₃(CO)₈(μ-H)(μ₃-Ph₂PCH₂P(Ph)C₆H₄)] (1) and Ph₃GeSPh in benzene at 80 °C led to the thiolato bridged compounds, [Os₃(CO)₈(μ-H)(μ-SPh)(μ-dppm)] (2) and [Os₃(CO)₇(μ-H)(μ-SPh)(μ₃-SC₆H₄)(μ-dppm)] (3), formed by cleavage of Ge ...

Polarization‐resolved femtosecond Vis/IR spectroscopy tailored for resolving weak signals in biological samples using minimal sample volume

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Unique biological samples, such as site‐specific mutant proteins, are available only in limited quantities. Here, we present a polarization‐resolved transient infrared spectroscopy setup with referencing to improve signal‐to‐noise tailored towards tracing small signals. We provide an overview of characterizing the excitation conditions for polarization‐
