Carcinoid Tumors of the Lung

Resection of typical bronchial carcinoid was carried out in 203 patients. The average age was 48 years, and the sex distribution was approximately equal. Bronchoscopy was the most definitive diagnostic procedure, even though 15% of the tumors were located in the segmental bronchus or beyond.

The enterochromaffin (EC) cell system is distributed throughout the entire gastrointestinal tract. Enterochromaffin cells are the major source of intestinal serotonin (5-HT), but separate subpopulations of EC cells may synthesize and store peptides as substance P (SP), motilin, and enkephalin as well.

Carcinoid tumors of the rectum

Carcinoid tumors of the rectum are not uncommon. However, multiple rectal carcinoids are very rare but can occur. The behavior of the rectal carcinoids is different than that of carcinoid tumors in other areas of the gastrointestinal tract. All carcinoids are malignant, and management is based on size and depth of invasion.

Carcinoid tumor of the thymus

Primary carcinoid tumor of the thymus is a rare, slow-growing neoplasm occurring most commonly in middle-aged men. The usual clinical manifestations are those of a mediastinal mass, although in asymptomatic patients, the diagnosis may be suggested by a routine chest roentgenogram. Excision is the most common treatment.

Abstract  Most ureteral tumors are transitional cell neoplasms. Neuroendocrine tumors of the genitourinary tract are extremely rare. To our knowledge, only one ureteral carcinoid tumor has been reported before. We report a second case of ureteral carcinoid tumor found in a 70‐year‐old female.
