The spectrum of carcinoid tumours and carcinoid syndromes
Annals of Clinical Biochemistry: International Journal of Laboratory Medicine, 2003Carcinoids are neuroendocrine tumours of the gut which may also be found in the bronchus, pancreatic islets and retroperitoneum. They probably arise from gastrointestinal or bronchopulmonary pluripotential stem cells. Carcinoid tumours derived from these cells are potentially malignant; the strength of the tendency for aggressive growth correlates with

Carcinoid tumor and carcinoid syndrome
Current Opinion in Anaesthesiology, 2003Carcinoid tumors secrete many different types of substances (e.g. serotonin, bradykinin) that may produce potentially fatal intraoperative reactions such as hypotension and bronchoconstriction. The most effective treatment for the deleterious cardiovascular and pulmonary effects of serotonin and bradykinin is octreotide, a somatostatin analogue ...

We reviewed 28 cases of carcinoid tumor arising in the small intestine (11 cases), appendix (eight), rectum (three), and lung (six), which were diagnosed during a ten-year period ending in 1977. Components of the carcinoid syndrome occurred in only three patients, all of whom had hepatic metastases from tumors of the small bowel.

Abstract 1. 1. Three cases of carcinoid of rectum are reported. 2. 2. All small lesions of rectum should be completely removed and entire specimen considered biopsy material. 3. 3. Periodic examinations of patients from whom carcinoid tumors have been removed are indicated and should include barium enema with air contrast. 4. 4.

Carcinold tumours afr by bo means rare. The wide range of sites in which they occur is explained by their origin from APUD cells of the neural crest. These cells migrate to all parts of the allmentary tract during embryonic life, and ultimately are found as well in various gut derivatives such as the respiratory, pancreatic and billary systems.

Seventy-four bronchial carcinoids were observed over a period of 20 years, representing 69.7% of so-called "benign" tumors and 3.8% of all bronchial tumors resected during the same period of time. The tumors were centrally located in 59 cases and peripheral in 14 cases.

Profound hypotension in patients with the malignant carcinoid syndrome has been noted during anesthesia,1,2palpation of the tumor at operation,3,4or spontaneous bouts of flushing.2,5-7The mechanism of the reduction in blood pressure is not clear, but an excessive amount of circulating serotonin is assumed to be a major causative factor.

The classical carcinoid tumour (WHO) of the pancreas is extremely rare and its diagnosis may puzzle physicians and pathologists. A case of such an impressive tumour is reported with reference to the few available data from the literature. Literature research was done using MedLine from 1996 going back to 1966.

CARCINOIDS of the gastrointestinal tract are relatively uncommon. These tumors are most frequently found in the appendix, and Foot 1 reports that 0.46 per cent of all appendixes removed for appendicitis were found to contain carcinoid tumors. The next commonest site for carcinoid tumors is the small bowel, and especially the terminal portion of the ...

Pancreatic carcinoids are very rare and usually have a poor prognosis. We describe a case of a pancreatic carcinoid with liver micrometastases in a female of 54 years of age in whom the tumor was without pronounced symptoms apart from rare episodes of flushing.
