Performance Analysis of a Cardiac Assist Device in Counterpulsation

Journal of Biomechanical Engineering, 1998
Performance of a cardiac assist device pumping chamber in counterpulsation was evaluated using numerical simulations of the unsteady, three-dimensional flow inside the chamber and an analytical model of the force required to eject and fill the chamber. The wall shear stress within the device was similarly computed and modeled.

Clinical Use of Cardiac Assist Devices

1993
Considerable experience has been gained in the clinical use of cardiac assist devices at Baylor. Since 1971, close to 2000 intra-aortic balloon pumps (IABP) have been used. The roller pump was used primarily for post-cardiotomy ventricular support in 94 patients. The DeBakey ventricular assist device was used back in the 1960s in six patients, with two

Cardiac Bypass and Ventricular Assist Devices

2014
This chapter discussed cardiac bypass—origin of coagulation defects, preparing the patient for surgery, and management of bleeding. Issues with ventricular assist devices will also be discussed. More than 100,000 patients undergo cardiopulmonary bypass surgery each year. Patients presenting for cardiac surgery may have a preexisting bleeding defects or

Artificial Muscles as Cardiac Assist Devices

Muscle-like actuators can function in various medical applications, such as heart failure, where the gold standard of treatment is currently heart transplantation with further research. With limited donors and strict criteria for suitable donors, the emergence of superior or similar-effect cardiac support devices is a welcome development, as currently ...
