Investigating the relationship between intrathoracic blood volume index and cardiac index

Intensive Care Medicine, 2000
To determine whether cardiac index and intrathoracic blood volume index are "mathematically coupled" under euvolaemic conditions with increasing levels of inotropic support.Prospective case series.A 14-bed general intensive care unit in a university-affiliated hospital.Twelve mechanically ventilated patients, monitored with the COLD system and ...

The Ratio Fallacy, with Special Reference to the Cardiac Index

Pediatric Cardiology, 2018
When comparing cardiac outputs in children of different sizes, or deciding on the normality of these outputs, we often convert the absolute output to the output per m2 body surface area-the cardiac index. For small infants, this leads to potentially large errors. The best way to evaluate these outputs is to determine their z values.

Cardiac vagal tone: A physiological index of stress

Neuroscience & Biobehavioral Reviews, 1995
Cardiac vagal tone is proposed as a novel index of stress and stress vulnerability in mammals. A model is described that emphasizes the role of the parasympathetic nervous system and particularly the vagus nerve in defining stress. The model details the importance of a branch of the vagus originating in the nucleus ambiguus.
