Comprehensive assessment of the quality of life in patients with breast cancer during neoadjuvant chemotherapy

open access: yesHeart Vessels and Transplantation
Objective: Advances in cancer treatment over the past decades have improved long-term patient survival but increased the incidence of chemotherapy-associated cardiotoxicity (CAC).

Creatinine clearance versus serum creatinine as a risk factor in cardiac surgery

open access: yes, 2003
Walter JA, Mortasawi A, Arnrich B, et al. Creatinine clearance versus serum creatinine as a risk factor in cardiac surgery. BMC Surgery. 2003;3(1): 4.BACKGROUND: Renal impairment is one of the predictors of mortality in cardiac surgery.

A comprehensive review of cerebral oximetry in cardiac surgery

open access: yes, 2022
Patients who undergo cardiac surgery are at increased risk of stroke, postoperative cognitive decline, and delirium. These neurocognitive complications have led to increased costs, intensive care unit stays, morbidity, and mortality.

Cyclic azapeptide CD36 ligand attenuates cardiac injury and reduces long‐chain fatty acid accumulation after myocardial ischemia–reperfusion in mice

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
In a murine model of myocardial ischemia and reperfusion (MI/R), the CD36 azapeptide ligand MPE‐298 reduces cardiac injury and transiently lowers left ventricular long‐chain fatty acids (LCFAs) accumulation 3 h after reperfusion, accompanied by a decrease of oxidative stress and inflammation‐associated genes' expression in the heart and adipose tissue.

An Analysis of the Effects of Noisy Electrocardiogram Signal on Heartbeat Detection Performance

open access: yesBioengineering, 2020
Heartbeat detection for ambulatory cardiac monitoring is more challenging as the level of noise and artefacts induced by daily-life activities are considerably higher than monitoring in a hospital setting.

Pulse pressure analysis: to make a long story short.

open access: yes, 2010
Pulse pressure analysis algorithms are commonly used to measure cardiac output and to allow for the rational titration of therapy in critically ill patients. The ability of these algorithms to accurately track changes in stroke volume (and cardiac output)

Prevalence and predictors of patient adherence to health recommendations after acute coronary syndrome: data for targeted interventions? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Background: Poor adherence is a significant nursing and public health concern because it affects patients’ quality of life. It compounds the disease burden of the growing coronary heart disease population.

From energy provision to protein synthesis: Tunnelling nanotubes as mediators of intercellular metabolic cooperation in cancer

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The cytoskeleton‐mediated transport of mitochondria via tunnelling nanotubes restores respiration, increases ATP production, rescues cells from apoptosis, activates the AKT/mTOR signalling pathway, promotes cell migration and invasiveness, contributes to cancer progression and treatment resistance.

Re‐Awakening Public Attention to the Silent Pandemic of Cancer Among Older Adults in Low‐ and Middle‐Income Countries

open access: yesAging and Cancer, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT As global populations age, cancer is increasingly becoming a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among older adults, particularly in low‐ and middle‐income countries (LMICs). Despite accounting for the majority of new cancer cases and deaths, older individuals remain underrepresented in cancer research, clinical guidelines, and health ...

Detection of Atrial Fibrillation Among Patients With Stroke Due to Large or Small Vessel Disease: A Meta‐Analysis

open access: yesJournal of the American Heart Association: Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Disease, 2016
Background Recent trials have demonstrated that extended cardiac monitoring increases the yield of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF) detection in patients with cryptogenic stroke.
