Carvedilol: Just Another Beta-Blocker or a Powerful Cardioprotector?
Cardiovascular & Hematological Disorders-Drug Targets, 2006Beta-blockers have been used to treat ischemic heart disease, due to negative chronotropic and inotropic properties, thus inducing a decrease in myocardial consumption of oxygen and nutrients, allowing a better balance between nutritional needs and the supply provided by the coronary blood flow.

Purpurogallin: In vivo evidence of a novel and effective cardioprotector
Life Sciences, 1994We observed that purpurogallin (PPG) which is a flavonoid markedly protects the rabbit against myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury. In rabbits undergoing 1-h ligation of the anterior ventricular coronary artery, a bolus infusion of PPG was introduced into the post-ischemic heart immediately before 3-h reperfusion.

Cardioprotector Activity of an Esteroidal Saponin: A Scientific and Technological Prospection
Recent Patents on Biotechnology, 2017Cardiovascular diseases are a group of disorders of the heart and blood vessels that account for a major cause of premature death worldwide. Diosgenin saponin is a steroid for therapeutic application in different clinical settings such as cardiovascular diseases, hyperglycemia and dyslipidemia control, antimicrobial, anti-viral and anti-inflammatory ...

Insulin: an endogenous cardioprotector
Current Opinion in Critical Care, 2003This review discusses the myocardial protective property of the insulin/glucose-insulin-potassium regimen and the mechanisms involved in this beneficial action. Several recent studies suggest that insulin not only is useful to control hyperglycemia and maintain glucose homeostasis but also may have the unique property to protect the myocardium from ...

Although doxorubicin is an anticancer agent with a wide spectrum of activity, therapy with this anthracycline must often be discontinued at a time of benefit to the patient because of the drug's cumulative cardiotoxicity. ICRF-187 (ADR-529, dexrazoxane) is a bisdioxopiperazine compound that protects against cardiac toxicity induced by doxorubicin. Our ...

[Na+/H+ exchange inhibitors: a new class of cardioprotectors].
Rossiiskii fiziologicheskii zhurnal imeni I.M. Sechenova, 2005The Na+/H+ exchanger (NHE) extrudes intracellular H+ in exchange for Na+ in an electroneutral process. Of the 6 mammalian exchanger isoforms identified to date, the NHE-1 is believed to be the molecular homologue of the sarcolemma Na+/H+ transporter. The exchanger is activated primarily by a reduction in intracellular pH, although such activation is ...
