Cardiothoracic surgery: time for reappraisal!☆ [PDF]

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery, 2008
Today I would like to reflect, sine ira et studio, about the status of cardiothoracic surgery by critically asking what has changed during the past decades. I shall conclude with some suggestions as to how we might adapt to these changes in order to carry forward the remarkable development of our speciality and to retain its attractiveness for those ...

Predictive Value of Perioperative Blood Lactic Acid Levels for Postoperative Crisis in Myasthenia Gravis Patients Undergoing Thymectomy

open access: yesMuscle &Nerve, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Introduction/Aims Postoperative myasthenic crisis (POMC), which occurs specifically after thymectomy in myasthenia gravis (MG) patients, is a serious complication with known risk factors such as prior myasthenic crisis. However, the predictive value of perioperative blood lactic acid levels (BLAL) for POMC remains unclear.

A historical review of experimental imaging of the beating heart coronary microcirculation in vivo

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, Volume 242, Issue 1, Page 3-16, January 2023., 2023
Intravital imaging of the beating heart microcirculation in vivo has been challenging. The past 50 years has seen changes in ways to both stabilise and image the heart with a shift from learning about coronary vascular anatomy and physiology to the role of thromboinflammation and other microcirculatory disturbances in cardiovascular disease.

Predicting Surgery Duration from a New Perspective: Evaluation from a Database on Thoracic Surgery [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2017
BACKGROUND: Clinical factors influence surgery duration. This study also investigated non-clinical effects. METHODS: 22 months of data about thoracic operations in a large hospital in China were reviewed. Linear and nonlinear regression models were used to predict the duration of the operations.

Spontaneous haemoperitoneum secondary to mast cell neoplasia and presumed splenic abscess rupture in a cat

open access: yesVeterinary Record Case Reports, EarlyView.
Abstract A geriatric feline was presented to a university teaching hospital for lethargy and inappetence. The patient was subsequently diagnosed with spontaneous haemoperitoneum secondary to rupture of a splenic mass and was taken to surgery for splenectomy following appropriate stabilisation measures.

Anatomical variation of the aorta in the West of Scotland – A population with high cardiovascular disease burden. Implications for stent design and deployment

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, Volume 242, Issue 1, Page 112-120, January 2023., 2023
A population with a high cardiovascular disease burden was found to have a high degree of anatomical variation in the aortic arch (angulation from coronal plane, origin of the vertebral artery) and the abdominal aorta regions (high degree of taper, high number of collaterals and tortuous vessels).

Exceptional Dehn surgery on large arborescent knots [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2006
A Dehn surgery on a knot $K$ in $S^3$ is exceptional if it produces a reducible, toroidal or Seifert fibred manifold. It is known that a large arborescent knot admits no such surgery unless it is a type II arborescent knot. The main theorem of this paper shows that up to isotopy there are exactly three large arborescent knots admitting exceptional ...

Recurrent nerve damage following thyroid surgery: What can I do?

open access: yesWorld Journal of Otorhinolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, EarlyView.
Abstract Objectives Bilateral recurrent nerve damage still represents one of the main complications following thyroid surgery, even though the nerve intraoperative monitoring has allowed the decrease of this injury. This observational retrospective study aims to define the onset modalities and the recovery time of different clinical conditions that may

Advancements in left ventricular assist devices to prevent pump thrombosis and blood coagulopathy

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, Volume 242, Issue 1, Page 29-49, January 2023., 2023
Left ventricular assist device (LVAD)‐related blood coagulopathy: Pump thrombosis is one of the most severe adverse events caused by LVADs. The contact of blood with artificial materials of LVAD pumps and cannulas triggers the coagulation cascade. Abstract Mechanical circulatory support (MCS) devices, such as left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) are

Enhancing Surgical Performance in Cardiothoracic Surgery with Innovations from Computer Vision and Artificial Intelligence: A Narrative Review [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv
When technical requirements are high, and patient outcomes are critical, opportunities for monitoring and improving surgical skills via objective motion analysis feedback may be particularly beneficial. This narrative review synthesises work on technical and non-technical surgical skills, collaborative task performance, and pose estimation to ...
