Cardiovascular surgery has traditionally been performed through a median sternotomy, allowing the surgeon generous access to the heart and surrounding great vessels. Recently, less invasive methods have been developed to allow the surgeon the same amount of dexterity and accessibility to the heart, thus resulting in a paradigm shift in cardiac surgery.
