The Swiss psychiatrist Carl Gustav Jung (1875–1961) had three—indirect and direct—encounters with Joyce. From March 1918 onwards Joyce was supported by Edith McCormick, a wealthy American who had come to Zurich to be treated by Jung, and when she cut off her subsidy at the end of September 1919 Joyce suspected that Jung might have influenced her.
