Carrion ecology: concepts, interdisciplinary synthesis, and perspectives

open access: yesBiological Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Carrion is a ubiquitous resource in both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, yet it has long been overlooked in ecological research. Over the past two decades, studies on carrion and the many organisms that exploit it have flourished, revealing not only wide‐ranging ecological functions but also significance far beyond ecology.

Patterns of brown bear damages on apiaries and management recommendations in the Cantabrian Mountains, Spain.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2018
Large carnivores are often persecuted due to conflict with human activities, making their conservation in human-modified landscapes very challenging. Conflict-related scenarios are increasing worldwide, due to the expansion of human activities or to the ...

When Nature Counts: Corporate Biodiversity Attention and Access to Bank Finance

open access: yesBusiness Strategy and the Environment, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This paper investigates whether corporate attention to biodiversity influences firms' access to bank loans, an overlooked question in the emerging biodiversity–finance literature. Using a novel, text‐based measure constructed from 446 biodiversity‐related keywords and applied to Chinese A‐share listed firms from 2000 to 2023, we show that ...

Hyaenas and early humans in the latest Early Pleistocene of South-Western Europe

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2021
Throughout the Pleistocene, early humans and carnivores frequented caves and large rock-shelters, usually generating bone accumulations. The well-preserved late Early Pleistocene sedimentary sequence at Cueva Negra del Estrecho del Río Quípar (CNERQ) has

Experimental methods in chemical engineering: The scientific method versus engineering design methodology

open access: yesThe Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering, EarlyView.
Abstract Engineering graduate students confuse the scientific method and problem solving when presenting their pre‐doctoral exams and theses: Science discourse adopts question and hypotheses to assert and establish a study's rationale, while it is problem and objectives in engineering design.

Odor uniformity among tomato individuals in response to herbivore depends on insect species. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2013
Plants produce specific volatile organic compound (VOC) blends in response to herbivory. Herbivore-induced blends may prime the plant for future attack or attract carnivorous insects; these responses have been considered adaptive for plants.

Pancreatic α‐cell dysfunction associated with equine insulin dysregulation

open access: yesEquine Veterinary Journal, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Insulin dysregulation (ID) in horses is characterised by insulin resistance and exaggerated insulin responses, yet the underlying endocrine mechanisms remain incompletely understood. In humans, α‐cell dysfunction characterised by exaggerated glucagon secretion contributes to metabolic disease; however, the role of pancreatic α‐cell ...

Insights into large carnivore predations and extensive farming practices in the Italian Alps: current issues and future perspectives

open access: yesItalian Journal of Animal Science
Extensive livestock farming provides crucial ecosystem services but faces several challenges (e.g. adverse effects of climate change, increasing production costs, lower scale economy).

Performance payments for carnivore conservation in Sweden [PDF]

open access: yes
Solving carnivore-livestock conflicts is essential if goals to preserve biodiversity conservation are taken seriously and livelihoods especially of poor livestock owners are to be safeguarded.

Ringtail (Bassariscus astutus) survival in southwestern Oregon

open access: yesThe Journal of Wildlife Management, EarlyView.
We captured and monitored radio‐collared ringtails over 2 years to estimate monthly and annual survival rates. We found that annual survival rates were much higher within forested landscapes in Oregon than for populations in the southwestern United States.
